Husky Women Cap Exhibition Season With 86-57 Win
Nov. 12, 2001
BANK OF AMERICA ARENA - Four Husky players scored in double-digits as Washington's women's basketball team closed out the exhibition season Monday with an 81-57 win over local professional team P&P Lady Express at the Bank of America Arena at Hec Edmundson Pavilion.
Fifty-five combined fouls threatened to slow down Washington's up-tempo offense, as the two teams combined to take 72 free throws. The Huskies took advantage of the opportunity, however, converting 62 percent from the line to account for nearly a fourth of its total points in the game.
Junior Kellie O'Neill tallied 18 points and eight rebounds off the bench for Washington, which shot 40 percent for the game while holding the Express to just 22 percent from the field. Junior Loree Payne tallied 15 points, sophomore Andrea Lalum amassed 14 points and seven rebounds, and junior Emily Autrey finished with 10 points of her own to highlight the Husky effort.
Stanford alum Regan Freuen scored 17 points to lead the Express.
'Individually, we had some people do some real nice work both offensively and defensively' said head coach June Daugherty, who piloted the Huskies to an NCAA Elite Eight appearance last season. 'Exhibitions are a good way to point out things that you don't see in practice everyday, things that we can work in practice in preparation for our season-opener.'
Washington, the Pac-10's top rebounding team in 2000-01, pulled down 53 boards against the Express. Five players had at least five rebounds, with Payne and freshman Kristen O'Neill leading the way with eight apiece.
The Huskies will open the regular season on the road with games at Montana State on Friday and at Wisconsin on Sunday, before returning home for the Seattle Times Husky Classic, Nov. 23-24.
