Beavers Fall To No. 5 USC In Four Games
Nov. 15, 2001
LOS ANGELES - No. 5 Southern California extended its home volleyball winning streak to 28 matches after knocking off Oregon State in four games Thursday night. Game scores were 30-23, 30-12, 25-30, and 30-18.
USC has now won nine straight over the Beavers, although the four-game match ended OSU's streak of four straight three-games losses to the Women of Troy in Los Angeles.
OSU (16-8, 9-6 Pacific-10) opened the match by hitting an impressive .351 in game one, but USC (19-3, 13-2) countered with an even better .429 mark in the opener to take a 1-0 lead. The Beavers faltered in game two, hitting just .036, and USC improved on its first game by hitting .545 in the second game.
The Beavers bounced back in game three, hitting .370, while limiting USC to just .125 efficiency to stay in the match, but the Women of Troy regrouped to take the match in four games.
'I couldn't be happier about the turnaround in game three. We couldn't have played a worse game two. That just shows how much tougher our team has gotten. That's so key,' said coach Nancy Somera. 'Games one and three were probably two of our most well-played games all year.'
Gina Schmidt led the Beavers with 12 kills and 13 digs to pick up her 16th double-double of the year, while Michele Solomon also had double-digit kills, hitting .400 with 10 kills. Lori Daedelow and Jessica Papell chipped in double-digits in the digs column, posting 12 and 10 respectively.
April Ross led the Women of Troy with 17 kills and was one of three USC players with 12 digs, while Keao Burdine and Jennifer Pahl had 15 kills apiece.
USC hit .313 with 69 kills for the match, while OSU finished with 54 kills and a .205 hitting percentage. USC also outblocked (10-3) and outdug (69-64) the Beavers.
'Our passing broke down in games two and four. USC has a very physical block, and they play exceptional defense behind that. They were scrambling around and played a little better out of system, and that was the difference,' Somera said.
