Cal Volleyball Loses to No. 4 Ranked Arizona, 3-0

TUCSON, AZ - The University of California women's volleyball team (8-16, 3-13) lost to No. 4 ranked Arizona (19-3, 14-3), 3-0 (30-17, 30-22, 30-21) Friday night at the McKale Center. The Bears were led by eight kills by junior middle blocker Reena Pardiwala and a team-high seven digs by sophomore Ashleigh Turner. Cal was hurt by 10 receiving errors and had a .055 team hitting percentage.
Arizona, which has won 11 consecutive matches, was led by Shannon Torregrosa and Jill Talbot with 12 kills apiece.
In game one Cal played well early, jumping out to a 5-1 lead behind a pair of Pardiwala kills, a kill by Leah Young and a couple of Arizona errors. The Bears held on a little longer, and had a 9-6 lead with the help of a Young kill and a Pardiwala service ace. Then Cal let the game slip away, allowing the Wildcats go on a 9-0 run. The Bears only had five more kills after that point - two by sophomore Heather Diers and one each by freshman Camille Leffall, sophomore Gabrielle Abernathy and senior Candace McNamee. Arizona finished off game one, 30-17, with three consecutive service aces.
Cal fell in game two, 30-22. The Bears were behind the entire game, but did get to 9-8 on a service ace by Turner. Cal did close the gap toward the end of the contest, going on a 4-0 run to get within 28-22 on a kill by Pardiwala and a solo block by Young. Game three was similar to game two with the Bears never establishing a lead and falling 30-21. Cal did tie the contest, 14-14, behind a 5-0 run with four Wildcat errors and a kill by Pardiwala, but the closest the Bears could get after that point was 22-19 on a Young kill.
Cal will next travel to Arizona State, Saturday, Nov. 17 in Tempe, AZ.
