Volleyball Drops Three-Game Match To Washington State In Season Finale

SEATTLE - Washington State's Adrian Hankoff had 14 kills to lead the Cougars past Washington in Pac-10 volleyball action, 30-18, 30-25, 30-22, Friday at Bank of America Arena. With the loss, the Huskies finished their 2001 campaign with an 11-16 overall record and a 4-14 mark in the Pac-10, while the Cougars improved to 15-11 overall and 9-9 in conference play.
Washington senior outside hitter Allison Richardson (Hemet, Calif.) led the Huskies offensively for the 17th time this season, finishing with 14 kills. Richardson also became the ninth player in Husky history to record her 1,000th-career kill, tallying the milestone mark with the UW leading 3-2 in the third game.
Richardson was helped offensively by sophomore Kara Bjorklund (Olympia, Wash.), who had seven kills, while three other Huskies finished with six kills apiece. Junior setter Gretchen Maurer (San Clemente, Calif.) led the team in assists with 36, while senior Lisa Underhill (Vista, Calif.) rounded out her Husky career by hitting .500 with six kills and no errors on 12 attempts.
After a 30-18 loss in game one, Washington stayed close early in game two, tying the score six times, before the Cougars took the lead for good at 7-6 on a kill from Holly Harris, eventually winning 30-25.
Coming out of the break, the Huskies built their biggest lead of the match in game three, jumping ahead by three at 11-8. The Cougars, however, quickly caught up, tying the score at 10, 12 and 14 before taking the lead for good at 15-14 on a block of a Richardson hitting attempt. Washington State then outscored the UW 10-3 over the final span to win the game and the match 30-22.
Despite the loss, the Huskies finished their 2001 campaign and opened the Jim McLaughlin era with 11 wins, the most by a UW squad since 1997.
