Two Wrestlers Claim Individual Titles At Southern Oregon Open
Nov. 17, 2001
ASHLAND - Three Oregon wrestlers claimed individual titles at the annual Southern Oregon Open and another placed second in the 16-team tournament.
Junior Brian Watson won the title at 141 after winning the championship at 133 last season, Jason Harless won at 133. At 165, senior Eugene Harris and Oregon sophomore Luke Larwin - wrestling unattached to preserve a redshirt season - met in the finals and shared the championship.
'We're just continuing to get better every week,' Oregon head coach Chuck Kearney said. 'In some spots we wrestled really strong and saw what we've been working on in practice. We're getting more aggressive and more confident and learning that we can control people.'
Tony Overstake, who made the switch to 157 permanently this week, had a good showing in his first attempt at this weight class. Overstake finished second, just shy of repeating his title from last season.
'It's going to take some time for Tony to adjust to a new weight class,' Kearney said. 'But everybody felt like this is where he needed to be to have success.'
