UC Santa Barbara Beats Western Kentucky At Stanford Invitational

STANFORD, Calif. - In the opening game of the Stanford Invitational Women's Basketball Tournament, UC Santa Barbara built an early 10-3 lead and never looked back en route to a 90-78 win over Western Kentucky on Friday night at Maples Pavilion. The contest was the season opener for both teams.
The Gauchos will now face Stanford, which defeated Indiana 87-72 in the late game, for the tournament championship on Saturday at 8:00 p.m. The Hoosiers will face Western Kentucky for third place at 6:00 p.m.
Gaucho center Lindsay Taylor had 19 points and nine rebounds in the first half alone to stake UCSB to a 45-33 advantage at the break. The Gauchos led by as many as 16 points in the opening half (36-20), before the Lady Toppers used a 13-6 run to shrink the lead before intermission.
UC Santa Barbara maintained control throughout the second half as well, as Western Kentucky could get no closer than seven points in the final 20 minutes. Natalie Powers cut the UCSB lead to 78-71 with a pair of free throws with 4:12 remaining, but UCSB scored the next eight points to pull away.
Taylor led UC Santa Barbara with 27 points, including 10-of-15 shooting from the floor, and 14 rebounds in just 29 minutes of action. Kayte Christensen added a double-double of 19 points and 10 rebounds for the winners, while Kristen Mann contributed 14 points and Lisa Willett 12.
Powers had a team-high 24 points for the Lady Toppers, while Leslie Logsdon chipped in 17.
