BEARS TRAVEL TO USF, HOST AUBURN AND ARIZONA STATE: The California women's volleyball team (8-17, 3-14 in Pac-10) travels to San Francisco Nov. 20 before hosting Auburn Nov. 24 at 3 p.m. and Arizona State Nov. 25 at 3 p.m. in Haas Pavilion. Cal will be attempting to snap a five-match losing streak at USF ( Bears 31-0 versus USF) and then conclude 2001 with wins over Auburn (1-23 as of Nov. 11) and ASU. The Bears match versus ASU marks the end of senior setter/outside hitter Candace McNamee's collegiate career, which entering the week includes 107 matches and 368 games.
LAST WEEK'S HIGHLIGHTS: The Bears fell to both No. 4 ranked Arizona (3-0) and Arizona State (3-1) last weekend in Arizona. Against the Wildcats, Cal was led with eight kills by junior middle blocker Reena Pardiwala and a team-high seven digs by sophomore Ashleigh Turner. The Bears hurt by 10 receiving errors and had a .055 team hitting percentage. Cal played better at Arizona State and were led by 18 kills by sophomore Gabrielle Abernathy, 15 kills by junior Leah Young and 11 kills apiece by sophomore Heather Diers and freshman Camille Leffall. Pardiwala led Cal with 15 digs. Diers and Leffall also recorded solid hitting percentages with .320 (11 kills, three errors, 25 attempts) and .600 (11 kills, two errors, 15 attempts). As a team, Cal is fifth in the conference in service aces with 128 aces, 1.51 service aces per game. Senior setter/outside hitter Candace McNamee is now third among active Pac-10 players for career assists (3,491).
BEAR NOTABLES: McNamee leads the Bears with 827 assists and 26 service aces and is seventh in the Pac-10 in assists per game (9.85). McNamee has had three triple-doubles in her career and is third on the Cal all-time assist list (3491) and 10th on the career service ace list (91) and career total block list (224). Pardiwala leads the Bears with 226 digs and 26 service aces, and is second on the team with a .299 hitting percentage and 54 total blocks. Last season she broke a school record with .298 single-season hitting percentage and is currently second on the school's career hitting percentage list (.269). Young is second on the team in kills (216) and is third on the team in kills per game (2.54). She led the Bears and had a career-high 19 kills and 12 digs in Cal's Oct. 23, 3-2, upset of No. 19 ranked Santa Clara. Leffall leads the Bears with a .338 hitting percentage (129 kills, 41 errors, 260 attempts) and 75 total blocks. Leffall is first among Pac-10 freshmen with her .338 hitting percentage and is 10th overall. She tied a Cal school record with 11 total blocks (three block solos, eight block assists) in the Bears Oct. 23 upset of No. 19 ranked Santa Clara.
HEAD COACH RICH FELLER: Rich Feller (34-47 at Cal, career 333-214, .609) is in his third season as the head coach of Cal's women's volleyball program. Feller came to Cal after a stint as an assistant coach on the USA National Team and 14 years as head coach at Colorado State (1983-96) where he led the Rams to eight NCAA Tournament appearances and 12 Top 25 national rankings. Feller earned his 300th career victory when the Bears defeated Denver, 3-1, Sept. 4, 1999.
CAL VS. THE OPPONENTS: The Bears have a 31-0 all-time record against USF (9-15), last defeating the Dons, 3-0, Sept. 8, 1998 in Berkeley. USF is led by 5-9 senior outside hitter Amanda Willnerd (248 kills, .240 hitting percentage). Cal will be facing Auburn (1-23) for the first time. The Tigers are led by 6-1 junior middle blocker Grace Boyd (212 kills). The Bears have a 10-25 all-time record against ASU (9-15, 4-12), falling to the Sun Devils, 3-1, last Saturday in Tempe, AZ. ASU is led by 6-0 senior outside hitter Jami Coughlin (331 kills, 354 digs). Sun Devil head coach, Patti Snyder-Park, was an assistant at Cal from 1984-88.
