Women's Tennis Travels To Hawaii For Matchup With Rainbow Wahine

STANFORD, Calif. - THIS WEEK'S ACTION
Stanford will travel to Honolulu for its annual Thanksgiving Holiday matchup with Hawaii. The Cardinal will square off against the Rainbow Wahine on Friday, Nov. 23 at 3 p.m. Last season's match was a one-sided affair, as the Cardinal won five of six singles matches en route to an 8-1 victory. Lauren Barnikow (Woodbridge, N.J.), Keiko Tokuda (Clifton, N.J.), Gabriela Lastra (Reno, Nev.) and Emilia Anderson (Cincinnati, Ohio) all notched singles victories and the Cardinal swept all three doubles matches as well. The singles wins for Barnikow and Anderson marked their first collegiate singles victories. Individual statistics are counted, but the match result will not appear in the overall record.
KALVARIA-LASTRA CLAIM HARDWARE AT ITA INDOORS
Cardinal seniors Lauren Kalvaria and Gabriela Lastra, ranked No. 7 in the national preseason rankings, captured the women's doubles title earlier this month at the Omni Hotels National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships in Farmers Branch, Tex. The duo defeated Wake Forest's Bea Bielik and Janet Bergman 8-4 in the championship match, which lasted just 40 minutes. The doubles title was the second for the tandem in a national collegiate championship, as the Cardinal duo also won the 2000 Riviera All-American Championships. It was the second straight title at the Indoors for Lastra, who won the 2000 crown with Laura Granville.
KALVARIA EARNS RUNNER-UP FINISH AT TOURNEY
Lauren Kalvaria also put together a strong run in the singles portion of the Omni Hotels National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships. Kalvaria, the tourney's No. 6 seed, dropped a 6-1, 6-3 decision to Wake Forest's Bielik in the singles final. She was bidding to become the fifth consecutive Cardinal player to win the Indoor singles title. Kalvaria went 3-1 during her run at the singles crown, in which she beat two ranked opponents.
BURDETTE SHINES AT NORTHWEST REGIONALS
Erin Burdette continues to impress in her first season on The Farm. Ranked No. 93 and now 10-3 during the fall, Burdette captured the singles title at the Omni Hotels Northwest Region Championships by defeating teammate Gabriela Lastra 6-1, 4-6, 6-3 on Oct. 29. Burdette dispatched of three top-30 opponents during her title run, including teammate Keiko Tokuda. Burdette and Lauren Barnikow continued their recent success, advancing to the doubles final before falling to Fresno State's top-ranked duo of Kim Niggemeyer and Simone Jardim. Burdette and Barnikow are 10-3 on the year.
Sophomore Lauren Barnikow and freshman Erin Burdette each won four singles matches at the Riviera All-American Championships at Pacific Palisades. Lauren Kalvaria was upset by Duke's Kelly McCain in the second round and finished 1-1 for the weekend. No. 10 Gabriela Lastra was also eliminated after winning her first round mat ch and senior Keiko Tokuda posted a 2-1 mark in three qualifying matches. On the doubles side, Barnikow and Burdette coasted past their first four opponents before eventually falling in the quarterfinals. The Cardinal's top team of Kalvaria and Lastra, ranked No. 7 in the preseason, advanced to the semifinals and finished 2-1.
