Nov. 20, 2001
BERKELEY - Freshman midfielder Angel Quintero has been named the Pac-10 Men's Soccer Player of the Week for Nov. 12-18, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced today.
Quintero tallied six points on the weekend as the Golden Bears (10-8-1, 3-5 Pac-10) defeated Oregon State and fell to No. 10 Washington. Quintero netted Cal's second goal in the 2-1 win over the Beavers on Nov. 16, as the Bears held on for their 10th victory, guaranteeing a winning season. Quintero posted two goals in the 4-2 loss to No. 10 Washington on Nov. 18.
When NCAA Championship invitations were handed out Monday, California was awarded its first postseason bid in five years. In just his second year, Cal head coach Kevin Grimes has led the Bears to a postseason berth after recording a 6-13-1 mark his first season. Cal plays at Santa Clara in opening round action Friday night, and the winner will meet Stanford in second round action, Sunday at 1 p.m. in Stanford, Calif.
This is the first weekly honor for Quintero and California's third Player of the Week honor all-time.
