Seven Cougars Earn Pac-10 Cross Country All-Academic Honors

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. -- Seven Washington State University runners were named to the Pacific-10 Conference Cross Country All-Academic teams, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced Wednesday.
Scott Johnson and Jenny Filipy received first team recognition while Ian Johnson and Beth Welander were second team selections. Kyle Barker, Jon Welsh and Mark Wicklander were named honorable mention.
Scott Johnson is a senior from Bellevue, Wash., with a 3.83 GPA in Business Administration. This is his third consecutive year as a first team Pac-10 All-Academic honoree for cross country. Filipy is a senior from Spokane, Wash., carrying a 3.74 GPA in Civil Engineering. She was named to the Pac-10 Cross Country All-Academic second team last year.
Ian Johnson is a redshirt-sophomore from Spokane, Wash., majoring in General Linguistics with a 3.57 GPA. Welander is a sophomore from Gig Harbor, Wash., with a 4.00 GPA but must wait until spring to declare a major at WSU.
Welsh is a senior from Carmichael, Calif., who earned second team honors in 2000. Barker and Wicklander are redshirt-juniors. Barker is from Oregon City, Ore., and Wicklander hails from Tacoma, Wash.
To be eligible for selection to the conference academic team, a student-athlete must have a minimum of 3.0 overall grade point average and be either a starter or significant contributor.
