Women's Swimming And Diving Signs Two To Letters Of Intent

Nov. 21, 2001

Stanford, Calif. - The Stanford women's swimming and diving program has announced the signing of two student-athletes to national letters of intent to attend Stanford in 2002-2003. The two incoming swimmers are Dana Kirk (Bremerton, WA/Bremerton HS) and Jackie Goldman (Glencoe, IL/New Trier HS).

Kirk, sister of current Stanford sophomore Tara Kirk (2001 NCAA champion in the 100 breaststroke), won the 100 meter fly and finished second in the 200 meter fly at the 2001 Summer Senior Nationals. Kirk was also a member of the U.S. team for the 2001 Goodwill Games and was among the world's best in the final 2001 world rankings in the 100 meter fly (16th), 200 meter fly (20th) and 50 meter fly (60th). Kirk was also the Washington state prep champion in both the 200 yard free and the 100 yard fly as a senior in the Fall of 2001, setting a state record in the latter event.

'Dana is an outstanding addition to an already accomplished recruiting class,' said Stanford head coach Richard Quick. 'She brings national and international experience to our program, and she has Olympic Games capabilities. Dana also brings with her great spirit and leadership abilities. We are thrilled with Dana's decision to come to Stanford.'

Goldman is a two-time winner of the Illinois state title in the 100 yard free and a two-time runner-up in the 200 yard free. Goldman is also a Senior Nationals qualifier.

'Jackie is a quickly developing national caliber sprinter that will play a key role in all of Stanford's relays and challenge for the top spot in the 50, 100 and 200 freestyles,' commented Quick. 'She also has the versatility to swim some backstroke and butterfly. She will be a very valuable member of the Stanford teams of the future.'

Stanford is currently the top-ranked collegiate women's swimming and diving team in the nation. The 2001-2002 team won all three of its dual meets in the Fall of 2001, including victories over defending national champion Georgia and perennial national power Texas. Last year, the Cardinal finished second at the 2001 NCAA Women's Swimming and Diving Championships. Stanford won six NCAA titles during the 1990's.
