Arizona Swimming Signs Five Promising Athletes at the End of the Fall Signing Period

TUCSON, Ariz. - The University of Arizona men's and women's swimming programs signed four female swimmers and one male swimmer for the 2001 fall signing period. The Wildcats will lose 11 women next season, including divers, while only losing four men.
On the women's side the Cats signed Katie Willis, the Washington state champion in both the 200 IM and the 100 breast. Willis attends John F. Kennedy High School and lives in Kent, Wash. From Esparanza High School in Anaheim, Calif., Arizona signed Erin Sieper, an Olympic trials qualifier in the 100 and 200 breaststroke. Fellow Olympic trials qualifier Marshi Smith will attend Arizona in the fall of 2002 and will swim the 50 and 100 free as well as the 100 and 200 backstroke. Smith medaled in the 50 backstroke at the 1999 Worldcup events. Rounding out the female recruits for this fall is Lisa Pursley from Colorado Springs, Colo. Pursley attends St. Mary's High School and swims the fly and free events.
The lone male signee is Dave Rollins from Sabino High School. Rollins is the Arizona state champion and the state record holder for class 5A in the 200 IM.
