Beavers Splash Back Into Action
Nov. 27, 2001
THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 29 - SATURDAY, DECEMBER 1
Oregon State at Speedo Cup, Long Beach, Calif., all day
Oregon State (3-2 overall, 0-1 Pacific-10 duals) returns to action following a three-week break as it takes part in the Speedo Cup in Long Beach, Calif. The meet, which annually draw over 20 of the top teams from up and down the West Coast, is one of the events the Beavers' aim for each season.
The Beavers last swam Nov. 10 in a 150-144 dual meet victory at Nevada. Since then, they've been preparing for the three-day invitational at the Belmont Plaza Pool, which will also be the site of next spring's Pacific-10 Championships.
'This is actually the part of the season where they start tapering and resting, so we don't do as much hard stuff,' OSU head coach Mariusz Podkoscielny said of the Beavers' recent workouts. 'It's a nerve-racking period for the swimmers because they are resting and feel like they are getting out of shape. They are trying to hit that small window where they will be at their peak performance. It's hard emotionally, because after months of work you are trying to hit a window that is about one week long.'
OSU has placed in the top four in each of its last three trips to the Speedo Cup, and is looking to continue to that trend.
'Traditionally, we perform well so we are looking to try and finish near the top,' Podkoscielny said. 'We are also looking for good individual performances. Most of all, we are trying to get season-best times and qualifying times for the Pac-10 Championships. We want to try to qualify a few swimmers for the NCAA Championships.'
With the meet lasting three days and events having preliminary heats, the Speedo Cup is set up similar to the Pac-10 and NCAA championship meets. Podkoscielny sees the Speedo Cup as a way of measuring OSU's preparation for upcoming dual meets and as a resource for championship meets at the end of the season.
'This gives us an idea where we are with our season, and it will show if there are any adjustments we need to make heading into the Pac-10 part of the schedule,' he said. 'This is the only invititational-format meet that we swim during the year before the Pac-10 Championships. The Speedo Cup is a three-day meet and is the same format as the Pac-10 and NCAA Championships, so it is important that we take advantage of that and practice racing and swimming in that kind of environment.'
The meet will also test junior Naya Higashijima's unbeaten streak in races this season. So far, Higashijima has won all 13 of her scoring races and has also won two races as a non-scoring exhibition competitor.
ALL-TIME AT THE SPEEDO CUP: Oregon State is making its eighth appearance at the Speedo Cup. The Beavers have excelled the last 3 years at the meet, placing fourth of 25 teams last year and third of 23 teams in the 1999-2000 season. OSU's best finish came in the 1998-99 season, when it took second place in a 21-team field. Oregon State first took part in the meet during the 1994-95 season.
LAST MEET: Naya Higashijima remained unbeaten on the season, winning 3 events as Oregon State beat Nevada 150-144 in non-league women's swimming on Nov. 10. OSU won its third straight dual meet, and the Beavers earned their first-ever win at Nevada.
Higashijima won the 500-yard freestyle, 200 butterfly and 200 freestyle against the Wolfpack. She has won all 13 of her scoring races this season and has also won a pair of races as a non-scoring exhibition competitor.
Birte Steven also won twice for OSU, taking the 100 breaststroke and the 200 breaststroke.
OSU won 11 of the 16 events, the Beavers spotted Nevada 32 points because Oregon State does not field a diving team. The Wolfpack had beaten seventh-ranked California the previous day.
'Today was just a great day for Beaver swimming,' OSU head coach Mariusz Podkoscielny said. 'We won the close races and we raced hard. We were the team able to overcome adversity, swimming at (high) altitude and being 32 points in the hole because we don't have diving. I was proud of them, and we're looking forward to the Speedo Cup (Nov. 29-Dec. 1). It was a great team effort.'
The Beavers needed to finish at least second in the 400 freestyle relay, the day's final event, to secure the victory. OSU's team of Kristin Huston, Bonnie Renwick, Suzanne Starkey and Steven picked up the necessary points to give Oregon State just its third-ever win over Nevada in the 12-meet series.
'Our girls just swam so awesome, we came together as a team,' Podkoscielny said. 'This was the best team effort I've seen from an Oregon State team. We started off with a great relay, out-touching them after they led most of the way and it was great for us to come through at the end.'
HEAD COACH MARIUSZ PODKOSCIELNY: Mariusz Podkoscielny is in his sixth season as head coach at Oregon State. Since taking over the Beaver program at the start of the 1996-97 season, Podkoscielny's teams have a dual meet record of 24-32 overall and 2-15 in the Pacific-10.
Podkoscielny, 33, is a nine-time All-American and 2-time Olympian. Prior to coming to OSU in the fall of 1996, Podkoscielny had been an assistant men's and women's coach at Arizona since 1993.
A native of Gdansk, Poland, Podkoscielny was a member of the Arizona swim team from 1988-92 and was one of the fastest distance swimmers in UA history. He was also on the Polish National Team from 1980-92 and competed in the 1988 and 1992 Olympics.
BEAVERS FACE TOP-FLIGHT SCHEDULE: Oregon State will compete against 6 teams ranked in the CSCAA coaches poll of Nov. 15: No. 1 Stanford, No. 3 Southern California, No. 5 Arizona, No. 7 California, No. 10 UCLA and No. 11 Arizona State.
STEVENS NATATORIUM: Oregon State swims its home meets at Stevens Natatorium on the OSU campus. The Beavers are 2-0 at home in dual meets this season and have an all-time record of 7-3 in the pool.
Stevens Natatorium is adjacent to Dixon Recreation Center, near Gill Coliseum. The pool opened in 1994 but was not outfitted for competition until prior to the 1999-2000 season.
OSU had scheduled its home meets at Corvallis' Osborn Aquatic Center since the community pool opened for the 1979-80 season. A few meets were still held on campus at Langton Pool.
OREGON STATE SCHOOL RECORDS: Members of Oregon State's 2001-02 squad hold 10 of the 14 individual event school records, and the Beavers have already begun rewriting the book this season. A look at the occasions when OSU has set school marks this season:
