Beavers Beaten At Arizona State
Nov. 29, 2001
TEMPE, Ariz. - Oregon State got wins from 184-pounder Isaac Weber, 133-pounder Nathan Navarro and 174-pounder Jake Huffman on Thursday but the Beavers fell to ninth-ranked Arizona State 25-10 in Pacific-10 wrestling at Wells Fargo Arena. OSU (4-1 overall, 1-1 Pacific-10) will compete in the 47-team Cliff Keen Las Vegas Classic on Friday and Saturday, along with ASU (2-0, 2-0) and a host of other nationally-ranked teams.
'We lost a couple of good matches, a couple close matches, but we didn't compete very well and that's the bottom line,' Oregon State head coach Joe Wells said of Thursday's dual. 'We gave up some easy scores and gave away some easy takedowns. They weren't in good condition, we chased them and chased them and chased them, but we made some basic, fundamental mistakes and we didn't wrestle well. We're capable of wrestling a lot better than we showed tonight.'
Weber started the night with a major decision for the Beavers, beating William Carr 10-2, but the Sun Devils won the next three matches to take the lead for good. Nathan Navarro, ranked 13th in the nation at 133 pounds, broke through for OSU with a 7-5 overtime win over Evan Larkin, but Oregon State didn't win again until 174-pounder Jake Huffman finished the meet with a 9-5 win over Jason Conine.
Navarro and Huffman both improved to 8-0 this season. Beaver 125-pounder Michael Delaney suffered his first loss with a 4-2 decision at the hands of Mike Simpson, he is now 5-1.
The Beavers' Jason Cooley was beaten in a battle of nationally-ranked heavyweights. Cooley, ranked 15th by Amateur Wrestling News, fought back after giving up a pair of early takedowns but was topped 7-5 by 16th-ranked Kellan Fluckiger in a rematch of last season's Pacific-10 championship match.
'We could have made it closer, but we made ASU look plretty good tonight,' Wells said. 'We're capable of doing a lot better, so I'm excited about seeing them at tournament the next two days. Hopefully, we'll get chance at a few of these guys in the tournament and even the score.'
Oregon State is without 174-pounder Nathan Coy this weekend, he is missing the trip for personal reasons.
