Dantzscher Places Third At Reese's Cup
Dec. 1, 2001
Houston, Texas - The all-Bruin team of Jamie Dantzscher and Steve McCain placed third at the Reese's Cup, an entertainment team competition at the University of Houston's Hofheinz Pavilion. Dantzscher and McCain recorded a combined score of 197.9, placing behind champions Tasha Schwikert and Jordan Jovtchev (199.1) and runners-up Svetlana Khorkina and John Roethlisberger (198.8).
Bruin sophomore Yvonne Tousek paired with Sean Townsend to place seventh with a score of 194.6, while former UCLA All-American Mohini Bhardwaj placed eighth with Alexei Nemov (194.3).
Routines were judged by celebrities from the sports world, including legendary gymnastics coach Bela Karolyi, 1996 Olympic Gold Medalist Dominique Moceanu and 1991 World Champion Kim Zmeskal. Five-time U.S. National Champion Blaine Wilson and the Houston Comets' Sheryl Swoopes also judged.
The competition was judged based on difficulty, originality, presentation and audience appeal. Each gymnast competed in two events of their choice. The women selected from uneven bars, balance beam and floor exercise, while the men chose from floor exercise, high bar and still rings. Each routine was performed to music.
Dantzscher performed an uneven bars routine to 'If You're Not In It For Love' by Shania Twain and a floor exercise routine to 'Let's Get Loud' by Jennifer Lopez. Tousek performed on bars ('All For You' by Janet Jackson) and beam ('There Will Come A Day' by Faith Hill). Bhardwaj competed on beam ('Livin' On The Edge' by Aerosmith) and bars ('Fly Away' by Lenny Kravitz).
Dantzscher and Tousek will return to Los Angeles for Sunday's Meet the Bruins event. The annual exhibition will take place at the John Wooden Center at 2:00 p.m.
