Arizona Cross Country Runner Wins Honda Sports Award
Dec. 3, 2001
The Honda Awards Program has announced that Arizona's Tara Chaplin is the recipient of this year's Honda Sports Award for cross country. She becomes only the second athlete in Arizona history to win the award. Amy Skieresz was the other winner back in 1996-97.
Chaplin won the NCAA Championship meet held at Furman University on Nov. 19. She was also the winner at the NCAA West Regional and the Murray Keatinge Invitational. The coaches of the West Region named Chaplin the region's athlete of the year.
After nationwide balloting, Chaplin was named the winner over three other runners. Also nominated for the award were: Lauren Fleshman (Stanford University), Renee Metivier (Georgia Tech), and Kristin Price (North Carolina State).
This automatically nominates her for the Honda-Broderick Cup, which will be presented to the Collegiate Woman Athlete of the Year at a banquet in Dallas, Texas on June 17, 2002.
