Cal Swimmers Alex Lim and Natalie Coughlin Win Titles on Third Day of Texas Invite

AUSTIN, TX - In a similar pattern as the first two days of the Texas Invitational, Cal sophomores Natalie Coughlin and Alex Lim stood out for the No. 6 ranked Golden Bears in the third and final day of the Texas Invite. Coughlin won her fifth title of the three-day competition Sunday, capturing the 100 free with a time of 47.76, setting a new Cal mark (old record 49.27 set by Haley Cope last season) and a new Texas Invitational record (old meet record 48.50 set by Texas' Colleen Lanne in 2000). Lim won his third individual title of the Texas Invite Sunday, winning the 200 back in an NCAA automatic qualifying time of 1:43.43.

Coughlin ended the Texas Invite having won the 100 fly (51.22, NCAA automatic), the 50 free (22.21, Cal record, meet record, NCAA automatic), the 200 free (1:43.77, Cal record, NCAA automatic), the 100 back (50.90, NCAA record, Cal record, meet record, NCAA automatic) and the 100 free (47.76, Cal record, meet record). Lim won the 100 fly (47.43, NCAA consideration), the 100 back (47.52, second-best all-time Cal mark, NCAA automatic) and the 200 back (1:43.43, NCAA automatic).

Coughlin is also coming off of a record-setting performance at the 2001 FINA World Cup in East Meadow, N.Y., earlier in the week, setting a world record in the 100-meter backstroke (57.08) Nov. 28 and a world record in the 200-meter back (2:03.52) Nov. 27. Coughlin, the 2001 Pac-10 and NCAA Swimmer of the Year, was named the FINA Cup's Female Performer of the Meet. She finished the FINA Cup winning four gold medals - the 100-meter back, the 200-meter back, the 50-meter fly (25.83, American and U.S. Open record) and the 50-meter back (27.29).

Other highlights for the Bears in the third day of the Texas Invite were the men's 400 free relay (Matt Macedo, Duje Draganja, Mattias Ohlin, Joe Bruckart) placing third with an NCAA consideration time of 2:57.21. The Cal women were fourth in the 400 free relay (Staciana Stitts, Coughlin, Danielle Becks, Michelle Harper) with an NCAA consideration time of 3:20.92.

Individual highlights for the Bears on day three included junior Staciana Stitts placing fourth in the 200 breast with an NCAA automatic time of 2:14.15. In the men's 200 breast, freshman Caleb Rowe was fifth with a time of 2:02.22 (2:02.05 in prelims) and senior Bayani Flores was ninth with an NCAA consideration time of 2:01.06.

In the women's 200 back, senior Alice Henriques was fifth with an NCAA automatic time of 1:58.70, while sophomore Kyoko Yokouchi was ninth with an NCAA consideration time of 1:59.94. Besides Coughlin winning the 100 free, sophomore Danielle Becks placed seventh with an NCAA consideration mark of 50.24. For the Cal men in the 100 free, freshman Duje Draganja was ninth with an NCAA consideration time of 44.50 and senior Matt Macedo was 10th with an NCAA consideration mark of 44.62.

In the 200 fly, senior Hiro Sakoda placed sixth with an NCAA consideration mark of 1:47.56. In the women's 200 fly, sophomore Kristen Sissener was 12th with an NCAA consideration time of 2:02.10, and Henriques was 18th with an NCAA consideration time of 2:02.82.

In the men's platform diving competition, freshman Nathaniel Dean was eighth (368.40), sophomore Robbie Quinn 10th (333.50) and junior Nic Bartolotta 12th (328.35).

The final scoring of the Texas Invitational was host Texas capturing both the men's and women's competition. The Cal men finished fourth with 480.50 points, and the Cal women were fifth with 419.50 points.
