WALNUT CREEK, Calif. -- STANFORD's Donald Sage and ARIZONA's Tara Chaplin were named the Pacific-10 Conference Cross Country Athletes of the Year, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced today.

Sage, a sophomore from Elmhurst, Ill., captured third place at the Pac-10 Championships and took top honors at the NCAA West Regional. He then capped off the season with a seventh-place finish, the highest placing by a Pac-10 runner, at the NCAA Championships.

Chaplin, a senior from Montpelier, Vt., also captured third place at the Pac-10 Championship and took top honors at the NCAA West Regional. But, it was her first place finish at the NCAA Championships that guided Arizona to a fourth place finish in the team standings.

Arizona State freshman J.J. Duke, from Clovis, Calif., was named the Men's Cross Country Newcomer of the Year. He was the top freshman at the Pac-10 Championships with a 15th-place finish, helping the Sun Devils to a second place finish - their best-ever showing at the Pac-10 Championships.

Stanford freshman Sara Bei, from Santa Rosa, Calif., was named the Women's Cross Country Newcomer of the Year. Bei, who finished second at the Pac-10 Championships, was key in leading the Stanford women to their sixth consecutive Pac-10 title and eighth overall. The seventh-place showing also sparked the Cardinal to the team title at the NCAA West Regional.

Also announced were the Conference Coach of the Year honors. STANFORD's Vin Lananna was named men's Coach of the Year, while ARIZONA's Dave Murray was named the women's Coach of the Year.

Lananna captures the men's coaching honor for the fourth time (he's also won the award four times as coach of the Stanford women). The Stanford men won their fifth Pac-10 title in the last six years, easily outdistancing the field by a 47-point margin of victory. It's the second largest margin of victory in the Pac-10 Championships since 1969. The Cardinal also took first place at the NCAA West Regionals and were looking to capture their second NCAA title, but fell one point short to Colorado (90-91) at the NCAA Championships.

While Murray has been honored on seven different occasions as the league's Coach of the Year on the men's side, this marks the first time he has won the award on the women's side. Under Murray's guidance, the Wildcats equaled their best-ever performance with a fourth place finish at the NCAA Championships. With Chaplin's individual title at the NCAA Championships, Murray has now coached four individuals (Aaron Ramirez '86, Martin Keino '94, Amy Skieresz '96, Chaplin '01,) who have taken top honors at the NCAA Championships.

The honors were decided by a vote of the Conference's cross country coaches.
