Five Women's Soccer Athletes Earn West Region NSCAA All-America Honors

Stanford, Calif. - Senior Amy Sauer (Spring, TX), juniors Marcia Wallis (Los Gatos, CA) and Callie Withers (Los Altos Hills, CA) and sophomores Natalie Spilger (El Cajon, CA) and Marcie Ward (Alamo, CA) were all named to the West Region All-America Soccer Team on Tuesday by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) and adidas.

Sauer, a First Team selection, was the anchor of the Cardinal defense which allowed 18 goals, including six shutouts. She played every match in her career and started all but one. Sauer also holds the all-time school record with 83 matches played and tied Jessica Fischer (1992-95) with 82 games started. Sauer earned First Team All-Pac-10 honors and was named to the Pac-10 All-Academic Second Team.

Ward is a First Team selection for the second consecutive year, and was named to the First Team All-Conference team. Ward led the Cardinal with 11 assists and finished the season with 10 goals. She led the Pac-10 in assists (11) and assists per game (0.52). Ward also finished second in the conference with 31 points.

Wallis and Withers were both named to the West Region All-America Second Team. Wallis led Stanford in scoring with 33 points (13 goals, seven assists), and recorded six game-winning goals. She was also a First Team Pac-10 selection and earned All-Academic Honorable Mention conference honors. Wallis also tied for first in the Pac-10 with 33 points. Withers earned All-Pac-10 Second Team accolades and Honorable Mention All-Academic honors. She finished fourth on the team with 11 points on five goals and one assist.

Spilger, a Third Team selection, also earned conference Honorable Mention honors. She was also a member of the Cardinal defense that recorded six team shutouts and allowed 18 goals in 21 matches. Spilger contributed three points to Stanford's offense on one goal and one assist.

The Cardinal finished its 2001 campaign with a 15-4-2 overall record after losing to Texas A&M in the Third Round of the NCAA Women's College Cup.
