Proposal Would Change College World Series Final To Best-Of-Three
Dec 5, 2001
OMAHA, Neb. (AP) - The NCAA baseball championship might be changed to abest-of-three series from the current single-game format.
A proposal to revise the series will be considered by NCAA officials inFebruary, said Dennis Poppe, the association's senior director for baseball andfootball.
If it passes, the national champion would be decided by a best-of-threeseries that would be played after the conclusion of the double-eliminationportion of the event. The proposal would start in 2003.
'The criticism of our present format is that it's not a true, pure formatfor baseball,' Poppe said. 'The new format would provide for baseball puristsa more true bracket, and I would be surprised if there is any objection toit.'
The CWS has been played at Rosenblatt Stadium since 1950. Until 1987, thetournament featured an eight-team, double-elimination format. That was alteredin 1988 to get the championship game on a set date for national televisioncoverage.
Poppe said the proposed format change would call for the opening game of thebest-of-three series to be played on a Saturday night. The second game would beplayed on Sunday afternoon, with a third game, if necessary, scheduled forMonday night.
In June, Stanford went unbeaten through the double-elimination round, butwas blown out by Miami 12-1 in the title game.
'When a team gets blown out because of a bad pitching performance, it getsanother shot at it,' Poppe said. 'In my mind you get your true nationalchampionship that way.'
