Zabala Selected by the Philadelphia Charge in WUSA Waiver Draft
Dec. 6, 2001
BERKELEY - Former Cal goalkeeper Maite Zabala was selected by the Philadelphia Charge in the second round of yesterday's first ever postseason WUSA Waiver Draft.
The Charge was the only team to take advantage of the second round and selected Zabala. Zabala was a reserve goalkeeper last season for the Atlanta Beat. The Boise, Idaho, product was one of only four out of 41 eligible players to be selected in the draft.
Zabala, who was a two-time first team All-Pac-10 pick, holds the Golden Bears career records for shutouts (26.5) and saves (277). She served as a volunteer assistant coach at Cal for the 2001 season.
