Cougs Rally Past Texas-Pan American
Dec. 7, 2001
PULLMAN, Wash. -- Junior Jerry McNair (Torrance, Calif.) scored 26 points to lead Washington State to a come-from-behind 70-67 victory over Texas-Pan American at Friel Court, Friday night.
McNair scored 20 of his points in the second half, including four three-pointers. He finished 6-for-8 from beyond the arc.
The win improved the Cougars to 4-2 while the Broncs fell to 5-3.
The first half featured six ties and seven lead changes. Texas-Pan American led 35-26 at intermission on the strength of a 12-0 run over a four minute plus span late in the first stanza.
In the second half, the Cougars chipped away and eventually tied the game 47-47 with 14:58 left on a pair of McNair free throws. The Broncs responded with a 7-0 to run to take a 54-47 advantage with 8:41 remaining.
Again WSU fought back to tie, this time at 57-57 on a McNair three-pointer with 5:29 to play. After Mire Chatman, who finished with a game-high 29 points, made a layup to put UTPA up 59-57, McNair answered with back-to-back treys to put the Cougars up for good at 63-59.
Texas-Pan American closed to within a single point on three occasions, the last coming at 68-67 after Kevin Mitchell drained a three with 13.7 seconds remaining.
McNair added a pair of free throws with 2.4 second remaining to put WSU on top 70-67. After the Broncs called timeout, UTPA threw away its in bound pass giving the ball back to the Cougars with 1.4 seconds left.
However, Mitchell stole the ensuing in bound pass and connected on a shot while falling out of bounds as time expired. The officials ruled the ball went over the backboard and waved it off. While the UTPA coaching staff felt the shot should have counted, it would have been only a two-pointer anyway, thus the outcome would not have changed.
WSU travels to Texas for a Monday night game in Austin. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. CST.
