Beavers Tough It Out For Win At Hawai'i

Dec. 9, 2001

HONOLULU, Haw. - Oregon State won its fourth straight dual meet and Naya Higashijima remained unbeaten in dual meet races this season as the Beavers topped Hawai'i 134-97 in non-league women's swimming Sunday at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex. OSU (4-2 overall, 0-1 Pacific-10) began its winter training trip with the meet and the Beavers will conclude their trip with a dual against Seattle on Dec. 18, two days later than the previously-announced date for that meet.

Against Hawai'i (0-2, 0-0 Western Athletic), Higashijima won the 1,000-yard freestyle, the 200 butterfly and the 500 freestyle to push her dual-meet win streak to 18 races this season. That helped OSU win a meet in which the Beavers overcame several potential pitfalls.

Oregon State spotted Hawai'i 26 points in the two diving events because the Beavers don't have a diving squad, OSU swam two days after wrapping up final exams and one day after flying to Honolulu, and OSU was competing just a week after its effort to reach peak performance for the Speedo Cup, a 21-team, three-day meet in which the Beavers set 11 school records.

'This was a very unique situation,' OSU head coach Mariusz Podkoscielny said. 'There were a lot of factors that could have gone the wrong way and taken us out of this meet, but the kids didn't let it affect them and it showed in their performance all the way through ... you could tell they were still tired and recovering from finals. It was a tough situation but they really came through.'

Also picking up wins for the Beavers were Kristin Huston on the 50 freestyle, Paula Finlay in the 200 backstroke, Birte Steven in the 100 breaststroke and teams in the 200 medley and 200 freestyle relays. In all three swimming races won by Hawai'i, OSU managed to have the second-place finisher and break up potential big points for the Wahine.

'Everyone performed really well and raced hard,' Podkoscielny said. 'It took a team effort to get us through today ... good things happen when you go out and race hard. Today was more about what was in the heart and mind than what was in the muscle.'
