The Sporting News Names Four Huskies to All-America Teams

Dec. 10, 2001

Seattle - The Sporting News announced its annual college football All-America Teams today and four Huskies were included on the various squads.

Senior defensive tackle Larry Tripplett was named a third-team All-American by the publication. He lead Washington with 14 tackles for loss, the most by any interior defensive lineman in the Pac-10 Conference during the 2001 season. Tripplett had a total of 38 tackles, including two sacks, and he blocked one field goal that was returned for a touchdown.

Washington had two players named as first-team selections to The Sporting News Freshman All-America team. Husky wide receiver Reggie Williams and kick returner Charles Frederick were both honored. Freshman punter Derek McLaughlin was a second-team selection.

Williams set Husky and Pac-10 freshman receiving records in 2001 with 55 receptions for 973 yards. Both of those marks ranked fourth on UW's all-time single season receiving lists. Williams ranked third in the Pac-10, and 21st in the nation with 88.45 receiving yards per game. He became just the fourth Husky player ever to post a 200-yard game with 203 yards on 11 receptions in 26-14 win over ninth-ranked Washington State. His 11 receptions in that game tied as the second-highest single-game mark in Washington history.

Frederick ranked among the nation's top-five in punt returns all season with a 14.6-yard average, but fell one return short of the minimum required in the final national rankings. His average was the second-best in the Pac-10, and sixth-best in a single-season at UW. He helped the Huskies tie for 10th in the nation in punt-return average at 13.33. Frederick's highlight during the season was an 87-yard punt return for a touchdown against Idaho, the fifth longest in UW history.

McLaughlin finished his rookie season at Washington with the fourth-best punting average (41.2) in school history. He had 16 of 52 punts downed inside the 20-yard line, and just two touchbacks. McLaughlin finished season with 10 punts of 50 yards or more, including a school-record boot of 74 yards at California.
