Women's Tennis Dominates Fall ITA Rankings

STANFORD, Calif. - Stanford's women's tennis team dominated the 2001 Fall ITA Rankings released earlier Wednesday morning in Skillman, N.J. Five Cardinal women are ranked in the top-100, while two doubles teams are ranked in the top-10, including the nation's top tandem of Lauren Kalvaria (Indialantic, Fla.) and Gabriela Lastra (Reno, Nev.).
Stanford seniors Kalvaria and Lastra, who earned a No. 7 preseason ranking, are the No. 1 doubles team in the country. The duo finished the fall season with a 6-1 overall mark and won the Omni Hotels ITA Indoor Championships title. The Cardinal placed another doubles team in the national rankings, as freshman Erin Burdette (Jackson, Ga.) and Lauren Barnikow (Woodbridge, N.J.) are at No. 6. The duo was originally ranked No. 16 in the preseason and finished the fall with a 10-3 overall mark and advanced to the finals of the Omni Hotels Northwest Regionals.
Five singles players were awarded a top-100 national ranking. Senior Kalvaria is ranked No. 4 after completing a 5-2 overall fall season and reaching the championship match of the Omni Hotels ITA Indoor Championships. Burdette climbed from No. 93 to No. 10 after an 11-3 overall fall campaign and winning the Omni Hotels Northwest Regionals. Lastra is ranked No. 11 in the country after a 7-3 fall tournament season. Other women awarded rankings are Barnikow at the No. 42 spot (7-3 overall) and senior Keiko Tokuda (Clifton, N.J.) at No. 52 with a 6-2 ledger in the fall season.
