Women's Basketball Drops Pac-10 Opener to Arizona, 66-61
Dec. 21, 2001
TUCSON, Ariz. - Ami Forney and Kiki Williams combined for 39 points, but California didn't get enough offensive production from other players as the Golden Bears dropped a 66-61 decision to Arizona in their Pac-10 opener.
'I thought we played a good second half,' said Cal coach Caren Horstmeyer. 'We did a good job coming back. We got them on their heels to take the lead then in the last three minutes we played not to lose. We're playing not to lose, rather than playing to win. We have to take more of a defensive focus when we get in that situation and try to take some pressure off of our offense. We had a couple of big turnovers late and then on the defensive end they had some o-boards we fouled on, and they hit the basket.'
Cal fell to 4-4 (0-1 Pac-10) with its fourth-straight loss. Meanwhile, the Wildcats improve to 5-5 (1-1 Pac-10).
Ami Forney led Cal with 23 points. Kiki Williams added a career high of 16 points, starting in place of the injured Leigh Gregory. Amber White posted a career-high 12 assists, which is the most by a Cal player since Eliza Sokolowska had 12 against Arizona in 1996. Elizabeth Pickney paced Arizona with 21 points and 11 rebounds. Also in double figures for the Wildcats were Dee-Dee Wheeler (12 points) and Robin Roberson (11 points).
The Bears were out-rebounded 44-28 with UA's Krista Warren leading the way with 15.
The first half was a sea-saw affair for the first 13 minutes with neither team leading by more than five points. After Cal went up 23-22 on a backdoor play to White with 7:17 until halftime, Arizona closed the half with a 14-4 run behind seven points from Pickney and five from Wheeler. The Wildcats led 36-27 at the half, which is the most first-half points the Bears have surrendered this year.
Cal immediately chipped into the lead (38-34) with a 7-2 run keyed by a three-pointer from Williams over the first 2:37 of the second half. The Bears then trimmed the lead to one point on several occasions. Finally, a layup from Williams with 7:56 left in the game put the Bears ahead 53-51.
The game stayed close for the remainder of the game, but with the game tied at 59-59, the Wildcats posted the next five points to go up 64-59. The Bears still had a chance to tie the game with less than 10 seconds left in the game. Cal was down three at 64-61, but the Bears were whistled for a five second call underneath their own basket.
Cal looks to earn its first league win of the season Sunday at Arizona State. Game time is 10 a.m. PT on Fox Sports Net.
