Jan. 4, 2002
The USC men's and women's swimming and diving teams, both ranked No. 10, resume competition for the first time in a month when it hosts UC Santa Barbara's men's and women's teams at the USC McDonald's Swim Stadium on Saturday (Jan. 5) at 1 p.m.
The Trojans (0-3 overall, 1-2 in the Pac-10) are still looking for their first dual-meet win after losses to No. 2 Texas, No. 5 Arizona State and No. 8 Arizona.
The Women of Troy (1-2, 0-2) opened the season with a win over No. 5 Texas, but then fell to No. 4 Arizona and No. 8 Arizona State.
The women's side has been exceptionally balanced this season with numerous automatic times firing off in many events.
Michala Kwasny has remained dominant as a junior and has already pocketed four NCAA automatic times this season: 200y IM (1:59.48), 400y IM (4:11.52), 100y fly (54.67) and 200y fly (1:56.45). She also has consideration times in the 100y breast (1:03.07) and the 200y breast (2:16.03).
Fellow junior Asa Sandlund, USC's top returning distance swimmer, has an automatic time in the 1650y free (16:27.53 and a consideration mark in the 500y free (4:48.52). Sophomore Jana Krohn, another fine USC flyer, has an automatic time in the 200y fly (1:59.73) and a B cut in the 100y fly (55.13).
Freshman Kaitlin Sandeno came in this year as one of the most highly touted frosh in the nation and has not disappointed. She has automatic times in the 500y free (4:45.72) and the 400y IM (4:15.05) and consideration marks in the 200y free (1:48.93) and the 200y back (2:00.00).
Senior Katie Meyer has posted USC's other consideration marks in the backstroke, swimming a 55.16 in the 100y and a 1:59.41 in the 200y back. Meyer also has consideration times in the 100y fly (56.04) and the 200y fly (56.04).
USC's best freestyle sprinter has been junior Jennifer Parmenter. She has USC's tops times in the 50y free (23.45), 100y free (50.48) and 200y free (1:48.15) - all B cuts - and also has a consideration time in the 200y IM (2:03.23).
In the diving pool, USC sophomore Nicci Fusaro and freshman Blythe Hartley have traded off wins in the springboard and platform events all season and look to continue their personal battle for first place throughout the rest of the season.
Heading into January, it's been no surprise who has been the stalwarts for the men's team. Senior Tamas Kerekjarto, juniors Erik Vendt and Jeff Lee and sophomore Klete Keller have led USC in each meet this season.
Kerekjarto's time of 1:45.74 in the 200y IM and Vendt's 14:52.27 in the 1650y free are USC's only NCAA automatic qualifying times for the men this year. Vendt has also posted consideration times in the 500y free (4:20.27), 400y IM (3:48.45) and the 200y breast (1:59.94) while Kerekjarto has consideration times in the 400y IM (3:51.81), 100y fly (47.43) and 200y fly (1:45.42).
Lee has posted consideration times in the 200y free (1:37.62), 100y fly (47.43) and 200y fly (1:46.03) while Keller owns USC's top time in the 500y free (4:19.80, NCAA consideration).
