No. 14/15 UCLA Hosts Washington State (4-7, 0-3) - Continuing Pac-10 play, Steve Lavin's Bruinswill host Paul Graham's WSU Cougars on Sunday (Jan. 6) at 1 p.m. (TV-Fox Sports Net/Fox SportsNet West, with Steve Physioc and Marques Johnson, Radio-Fox Sports AM1150, with Chris Robertsand Bob Myers).

UCLA vs. WSU - The Bruins lead the series 81-12 and have won the last 18 in a row, including twoweeks ago, when UCLA won at Pullman 79-74 (see attached box). WSU has never won in Pauley(dating back to 1965-66 season, 0-36) and has never won in Los Angeles, in a series that dates back to1937. WSU's last win over UCLA was during the 1993 Pac-10 season, winning 67-56 in Pullman.

Washington State - On Friday, the Cougars lost to USC at The Forum , 85-64. It was WSU's fourthconsecutive loss.

Jan. 4 - at No. 14 UCLA 74, Washington 62 - UCLA held Washington scoreless for almost the finalsix minutes of the game and defeated the Huskies 74-62 before 7, 567 in Pauley Pavilion. The Bruinsled 34-31 at halftime.

UCLA led 60-59 with 6:36 left to play and then outscored the Huskies 10-0 in the next sixminutes, to lead 70-59 with 57 seconds left to play.

The Bruins were led by three players in double figures - sophomore T. J. Cummings, 22points and 11 rebounds, junior Jason Kapono, 13 points and five rebounds and senior Matt Barnes,12 points, six rebounds and eight assists.

UCLA shot 46.8 from the field, including 55.6 (15-27) in the second half, 23.1 (3-13) fromthree-point range and 61.9 (13-21) from the foul line, with a game-high 46 rebounds and 11turnovers.

The Huskies shot 38.2 from the field, 34.5 (10-29) from three-point range and 55.6 (10-18)from the foul line, with 29 rebounds and a game-high 12 turnovers. UW was led by Josh Barnard's22 points.

Bruin Head Coach Steve Lavin - In his sixth year as the Bruin head coach, he's 10-2 this season, has directed the Bruins to eight consecutive wins, and has a school and overall mark of 124-49 (71.7).Lavin is 11-0 vs. WSU.

The 10-2 overall record ties for the best start of his career (in 1998-99, the Bruins began 10-2and lost the next game at Oregon State, in 1997-98, UCLA started 10-2 and won its next three gamesbefore losing at Stanford). If UCLA beats WSU, the 4-0 Pac-10 beginning will tie his best conferencestart (4-0 last season, lost the fifth league game at Arizona).

Lavin's five+ seasons have been highlighted by yearly winning streaks - 2001-02 - eightgames, 2000-01- eight (later in the season) and six games (earlier), 1999-00- eight games (late in theseason, including NCAA), 1998-99-eight games (early), 1997-98-nine games (early) and 1996-97-12 toend season, including NCAA (longest win streak of Lavin's career).

Under Lavin, the Bruins have won 23 of their last 27 Pac-10 games, including the final six of1999-00, 14-4 (third-place) last year and 3-0 this season.Under Lavin, the Bruins are 106-4 when leading at the five-minute mark.

Athletic Director's Honor Roll - In fall quarter grades, the Bruins had two players make the Athletic Director's Honor Roll (a 3.0 gpa or higher)- junior Jason Kapono (history major) and senior MattBarnes (history major).

Community Service - On Monday, Jan. 7 from 4:30-5:45 p.m., the Bruins will make their annualvisit to the City of Hope Cancer Center in Duarte. The media contact is Taylor Mayo(1-800-888-5323). Bruin Starters
Jason Kapono - UCLA's leading scorer (19.3), he also leads the Bruins in minutes (36.2), three-point (48.7, 37-76) and foul shooting (49-58, 84.5) is No. 2 in rebounding (5.8) and assists (2.9). A Wooden Award Midseason (Top 30) selection, Kapono recently set the school record for three-pointers (henow has 203) and holds the school record for three-point shooting (46.9, 203-433).

Vs. UW, Kapono had 13 points, five rebounds and an assist in 39 minutes (season-hightying).

He's led the Bruins in scoring six times this season, twice in rebounding and has scored indouble figures in every game, including four games of 22 or more (career-tying high of 28 vs.Pepperdine). He set a season-best in rebounds this season of 11 vs. Columbia. In the last four games,he's averaging 7.25 (29) rebounds.

Billy Knight - The Bruins' No. 2 scorer (13.8), also No. 2 in minutes (30.0) and three-point shooting (47.1, 24-51) and No. 3 in foul shooting (79.7, 47-59). He leads the team in steals (1.5) and is No. 3 in assists (2.0).

Vs. UW, he had seven points and rebounds (career-high, including a career-high fouroffensive rebounds) and one assist and steal in 33 minutes.

He's scored in double figures 10 of 12 games (his seven points vs. Washington snapped astreak of 10 straight double figure games), including three games of 20 or more (his season -high is21 vs. UC Irvine). He's led the Bruins in steals fivetimes this season. His team-high 20 points vs.Georgetown was also a season-best.

Matt Barnes - UCLA's No. 4 scorer (11.3), he's UCLA's No. 1 rebounder (6.1) and leads in assists(3.2).

Vs. UW, he played 36 minutes, with 12 points, six rebounds, a career-high eight assists andone steal.

He's scored in double figures six times this season, including the last two games, with onedouble-double. He's hit 25 of his last 46 field goal attempts (54.3), including eight of 14 three-pointers (57.1). He's averaged 7.5 assists (15) in the last two games.

Dan Gadzuric - Is UCLA's No. 5 scorer (9.1) and No. 3 rebounder (5.3). He's shooting 53.2 from the field (No. 3 on the team).

Vs. UW, Gadzuric picked up two early quick fouls and for the game, played only six minutes(second lowest this season, played four vs. South Carolina in Maui while nursing a left ankle injury),with two points and one rebound.

Had a huge weekend at the Washington schools, leading the Bruins to two victories at UW(23 points, career-high, 13 rebounds, season-high) and WSU (20 points). It was UCLA's first sweepat the Washington schools since 1997, the last year UCLA won the Pac-10.

He's scored in double figures five times this year with two double-doubles.

Rico Hines - The Bruins are 8-0 since he was inserted into the starting lineup on Dec. 5 vs. UCRiverside. On the court, he's UCLA's leader and top defensive performer.

Vs. UW, he played 22 minutes, with two points five rebounds and two assists.

In his last three games, he averaging 5.7 (17) rebounds.

Bruin Depth
T. J. Cummings - Is UCLA's No. 3 scorer (12.3), No. 4 rebounder (4.2) and top shooter (tied withAndre Patterson) from the field (58.8, 60-102). He's appeared in all 12 games but has not started yetthis season.

Vs. UW, he had a game-high tying 22 points, a career-high 11 rebounds (his first careerdouble-double), with one assist and blocked shot (season-high tying) in 31 minutes.

He's led the Bruins in scoring three times this year, including two of the last three games andtwice in rebounding. He's scored in double figures off the bench six times this season, including thelast three games and four of the last five. He had a career-high 25 points vs. South Carolina. In thelast three games, he's averaging 19.3 points (58) and shooting 67.6 (23-34) from the field.

Cedric Bozeman - Made his first appearance vs. UW since arthroscopic right knee surgery on Dec.3. Against the Huskies, Bozeman played seven minutes with six points, two rebounds and one assist.

Nine Players vs. UW - UCLA used nine players vs. the Huskies, and in the first half had all threetrue freshmen (Bozeman, Dijon Thompson and Andre Patterson) on the floor at the same time. Forthe game, Patterson ended with six points (season-high tying), four rebounds and three assists(season-high) in 11 minutes and Thompson had four points, two rebounds and two steals in 15minutes. In the last four games, Patterson is 66.7 (6-9) from the field.
