Jan. 7, 2002
Berkeley - RB Terrell Williams, TE Jordon Hunter and DE Lorenzo Alexander were named to the Sporting News Pac-10 All-Freshman Team today. The true freshmen played key roles for the Bears during the 2001 campaign.
Williams was thrust into the limelight this season after injuries to starter Joe Igber forced the hand of the Cal coaching staff. Williams exceeded expectations, playing in all 11 games and leading the team in rushing yardage. He finished the team with 688 yards on 160 carries and four touchdowns. He also hauled in 14 passes, picking up 132 yards and one score.
Hunter, who became a starter late in the season, played for the Bears in seven contests. He caught five passes for 46 yards and one touchdown, as well as performing various special teams duties.
Alexander was a stalwart along the defensive line and earned Cal's Clint Evans Award as the team's most intense true freshman. Alexander ended the 2001 campaign with 24 tackles, including 20 unassisted stops. He also had five tackles for loss, one sack and a fumble recovery.
