Hungry Huskies Take Bite Out of Bears, 85-46
Jan. 17, 2002
SEATTLE, Wash. - Washington's women's basketball team tonight won their 10th-consecutive Pac-10 home game, routing Cal, 85-46, before a season-high 4,007 fans at Bank of America Arena. The Huskies have not lost a Pac-10 home game since Jan. 18, 2001.
The Huskies (10-7, 5-3) scored 54 points in the first half, despite being held without a basket for the first 4:42 of the contest. Junior Loree Payne broke the drought with a 15-foot jumper, keying a 25-7 run that buried the Bears (10-6, 0-7) with 8:20 remaining in the half. Washington shot 58 percent in the half, while holding Cal to just five field goals on 20 percent shooting.
Twelve Huskies put points on the scoreboard, led by the 12 points of junior Kellie O'Neill. Sophomore LaTasha O'Keith led all Cal scorers with 10.
'It was good to see us bounce back after the two losses in the desert,' said sixth-year head coach June Daugherty. 'There were no letdowns tonight, we played 40 minutes of hard basketball. We made big improvements in our transition defense, and moved well without the ball.
Washington pounded the ball inside to the benefit of its post players, who combined for 45 points to help the Huskies post a 40-4 scoring advantage in the paint. The strategy also helped the team tally a season-high 26 assists, led by five apiece from guards Giuliana Mendiola and Cheryl Sorenson.
Defensively, Washington flummoxed the Bears, forcing 26 turnovers and holding Cal to just 11 field goals on 20.8 percent shooting, both Husky opponent lows. After separate 29-5 and 23-11 scoring runs to build a 54-20 halftime lead, the Huskies opened the second half with a 21-6 run, holding its largest lead, 75-26, with 10:18 to play.
'Our execution was excellent, and it allowed us to get a lot of open looks,' Daugherty added. 'We had a lot of players in rhythm tonight.'
Washington welcomes fourth-ranked Stanford to Bank of America Arena on Saturday at 3 p.m. The game will be televised live on Fox Sports Northwest. The Bears travel to face Washington State at 6 p.m. Saturday.
