Swimming At UC Irvine
Jan. 17, 2002
Both the USC swim teams and diving squads will be in action this weekend as the swimmers race at UC Irvine on Saturday (Jan. 19) while divers compete in the Bruin Diving Invite Friday through Sunday (Jan. 18-20) at the Rose Bowl Aquatic Center in Pasadena.
The USC men's (3-3) and women's (3-2) swimming teams, both ranked No. 10, will be competing in their final non-conference dual meets of the season when they face the Anteaters on Saturday at 1 p.m.
After the meet against Irvine, the women's team re-opens Pac-10 competition by hosting No. 6 Cal on Feb. 1 and top-ranked Stanford on Feb. 2. The men then host No. 7 Cal on Feb. 8 and No. 1 Stanford on Feb. 9. All meets are scheduled to start at 1 p.m. at McDonald's Swim Stadium.
Michala Kwasny continues to be the mainstay for the women's squad. The junior has already pocketed four NCAA automatic times this season: 200y IM (1:59.48), 400y IM (4:11.52), 100y fly (54.67) and 200y fly (1:56.45). She also has consideration times in the 100y breast (1:03.07) and the 200y breast (2:16.03).
Senior Tamas Kerekjarto has had equally diversified success for the men. His time of 1:45.74 in the 200y IM is one of only two NCAA automatic qualifying times on the Trojan squad. He also has consideration times in the 400y IM (3:51.81), 100y fly (47.43) and 200y fly (1:45.42).
The diving corps has been led by freshman Blythe Hartley and sophomore Nicci Fusaro, both favorites this weekend for first-place marks in Pasadena. All-American senior Kellie Brennan, injured for most of this season, is also scheduled to compete.
