Jan. 17, 2002
PORTLAND, Ore. - The University of Oregon women's tennis team defeated Portland 6-1 on Thursday in the first dual match of the season.
The Ducks (1-0) swept Nos. 2-6 in singles as well as three doubles matches. Oregon sophomore Davina Mendiburu was the only player to drop a match as Portland's Courtney Perkins came away with a 7-5, 6-1 win.
'I was pleased with the effort,' Oregon coach Jack Griffin said. 'We competed hard. It was nice to get the first match out of the way and get comfortable with the things we've been working on. We had some improvement in doubles.'
Oregon next travels to Seattle to compete in the Pac-10 Indoors. All nine Pac-10 schools that sponsor women's tennis, including last year's NCAA champion, Stanford, will be involved. Singles and doubles competition begins Friday and Saturday at 9 a.m. with the championship matches Sunday.
