Gymnasts Drop Pac-10 Opener To Cal
Jan. 18, 2002
BERKELEY, Calif. - Jerra Lopez won two individual event titles and Elizabeth Jillson won another, but the Oregon State gymnastics team dropped its Pacific-10 opener at California on Friday. Cal won, 193.250-193.125.
Jillson scored a 9.90 to win bars, while Lopez claimed first with a 9.80 on beam and tied for first with a 9.875 on floor. Lopez also ended up taking second on bars with a 9.875 and finished second in the all-around with a 38.525.
'I'm proud of the way this team fought. They didn't give up. The scores were tight on vault, but they came back strong on floor,' coach Tanya Chaplin said. 'Then the first two up on beam fell, but the rest did awesome. We learned a lot from this meet.'
OSU turned in a 49.100 on bars to get off to a good start in the meet, as Lindsay Nelson ended up tying for third with a 9.85 on the event to give the Beavers a share of the top three places on the event.
The Beavers couldn't keep the momentum going through the next rotation, with only two scores of 9.65 or better on vault. Heather Justus led the way with a fourth-place 9.80, and Tanya Ricioli scored a 9.65, but the Beavers finished the event with a 47.175.
Cal, which claimed the top three spots on vault held a 97.500-96.275 advantage over OSU at the halfway point.
The Beavers rebounded by hitting six-for-six on floor, good for a 49.075. Lopez anchored the squad with a team-best 9.875, while Elaine Yoder tied her career-high with a 9.80. Ricioli also added a 9.80 as well. The Beavers also counted a pair of 9.775 marks from Justus and Nelson.
After the strong performance on floor, OSU cut Cal's lead to just .500 heading into the final event but a disappointing start on beam didn't make the Beavers' chances for a comeback very probable. But, after the first two beam performers fell, the next four all hit their routines. Lopez, third up in the lineup, ended up leading the team with a 9.80, while Yoder added a 9.775 for the second week in a row.
Annie Campbell did not compete for the Beavers as a result of the passing of her father earlier this week.
