Men's Hoops Takes On No. 18 USC

Jan. 18, 2002

ASU VS. USC: The Arizona State men's basketball team (10-6, 3-4), under fourth-year head coach Rob Evans, meets the No. 18 USC Trojans (13-3, 5-1) at 4 p.m. MST on Saturday, Jan. 19, at Wells Fargo Arena. Tim Healey and Lionel Hollins have the radio call on the Sun Devil Radio Network, while Dan Shulman and Jay Bilas have the call for ABC (KNXV-15 in Phoenix). ASU fell to UCLA 82-79 on Thursday while USC lost at No. 15 Arizona 97-80. ASU is 9-4 after starting the season 1-2 and is the only Pac-10 team to defeat Oregon this year.

VS. UCLA (JAN. 17): Arizona State put up a season-high 77 field goal attempts but made just 30 (.390) in an 82-79 loss to No. 9 UCLA on Thursday. ASU matched a season-low with seven turnovers, but fell behind 23-16 at the 7:14 mark of the first half. ASU took the lead at 29-28, but the Bruins went on an 8-2 run to close the half and lead 36-31. UCLA led by as many as 14 in the second half but ASU cut the lead to four with :49 seconds left. Chad Prewitt led four ASU players in double figures, as he had 22 points and eight boards. Curtis Millage added 15 points and seven boards while Tommy Smith had 13. Jason Braxton and Awvee Storey added 10. Shawn Redhage matched a career-high with seven assists. ASU was just 6-of-27 (.222) from the three-point stripe, including 0-of-7 (.000) in the first half. The Bruins outrebounded ASU 50-35 and shot 49.2 percent (30-of-61), including 16-of-30 (.533) in the first half. The -15 rebounding margin marked just the fourth time in Rob Evans's 274 games as a head coach his team had been outrebounded by 15 or more boards.

NEW GROUP: Expect ASU to have a completely new starting five against USC compared to last year's game in Tempe. ASU should start freshman Jason Braxton and junior college transfer Curtis Millage in the backcourt, who are both in their first year. Kenny Crandall was on a Mormon Mission last year and Tommy Smith was coming off the bench. Chad Prewitt missed last year's USC game with a badly sprained ankle. ASU started Alton Mason, Donnell Knight, Shawn Redhage, Awvee Storey and Tyson Johnston in the game last year. Mason was a senior while the other four players are reserves.

SHOOT IT, PREWITT: Senior Chad Prewitt, the Pac-10 Player of the week on Jan. 7, is averaging 20.9 points and 7.9 boards in the past eight games and is 51-of-64 (.797) from the free throw line in that time. Prewitt has eight 20-point games on the year (16 games) after posting just two in his first three seasons (89 games). He has led ASU in scoring in seven of the past eight games. In Pac-10 play, he is averaging 20.4 points per game. Prewitt is the first four-year player under Evans at ASU, as the ASU program has been void of four-year players in the past decade. Beginning with the 1992-93 season, ASU has had just four four-year players: Eddie House (1996-2000), Jeremy Veal (1994-98), Ron Riley (1992-96) and Quincy Brewer (1992-97). Prewitt has 960 career points and has averaged 9.1 points per game in his career. He averaged just 4.1 points per game in his freshman season.

MILEAGE OUT OF MILLAGE: Junior college transfer Curtis Millage has made quite an impact in his first season. After starting the season 3-of-19 (.158) from the three-point stripe, he is 13-of-31 (.419) from beyond the arc. He is averaging 17.8 points per game in his past four contests.

TAKING CARE OF THE BALL: ASU had seven turnovers vs. UCLA on Jan. 17 and vs. OSU on Jan. 4, the second-fewest in Rob Evans' 108 games as ASU coach. ASU is averaging just 12.3 turnovers in the past six games.

THE USC SERIES: USC leads the series 35-26 and has won six of the past seven games. ASU's lone win in that time was a 93-81 win in Tempe on Feb. 19, 2000.

BRAXTON A STARTER: Freshman Jason Braxton has started the past seven games at point guard and ASU is 5-2 in that time. He posted a season-high 10 points in the UCLA game on Thursday and matched a season-high with 27 minutes.

REDHAGE PUTS TOGETHER PAIR: Junior forward Shawn Redhage has made 158-of-191 (.827) free throws in his career, the best mark in ASU history. Redhage is 19-of-22 (.864) on the year. He also matched a career-high with seven assists vs. UCLA on Thursday. He had six points, six boards and seven assists in 18 minutes off the bench. Last Saturday against Washington State, Redhage played a season-high 24 minutes and notched eight points.

*ASU was 18-of-20 (.900) from the free throw line against Canisius on Dec. 28, its best mark since Jan. 24, 1998, when it went 15-of-16 (.938) at Oregon.

*ASU is 10-1 this year when it leads at the half, 0-5 when it trails at the half.

*ASU made 18-of-24 (.750) shots in the second half to beat Oregon and held the Ducks to just 4-of-20 (.200) from the three-point stripe.

*Shawn Redhage became the eighth ASU player to lead the team in assists this year with his seven on Thursday, which matched an ASU individual high.
