No. 10 Wrestling Meets Tough Challenge at National Duals

Jan. 19, 2002

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Posting a 1-2 record in the first day of competition, Arizona State's 10th-ranked wrestling squad was eliminated from the 2002 Cliff Keen/NWCA National Duals hosted by The Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio, Saturday.

The Sun Devils (5-2 overall) suffered their first loss of the season, a 29-14 defeat by No. 8 seed Iowa State, in the preliminary round, before an exciting win over Lehigh via tiebreaker in the consolation first round. In the final match at heavyweight, ASU's Kellan Fluckiger tied the team score at 21 with a pin of Lehigh's Joe Sahl and the Sun Devils were awarded the victory by criteria C (greater number of technical falls). It was Nick Frost's technical fall at 165 pounds that proved to be the deciding factor. ASU was then eliminated in the consolation second round by fifth-seeded Iowa, 39-3.

Four ASU wrestlers compiled records of 2-1 in the three matches including redshirt-freshman Mike Simpson (125), senior David Douglas (133), sophomore Nick Frost (165) and junior Kellan Fluckiger (HWT). Top-ranked 141-pounder Eric Larkin suffered his second loss of the season in the Iowa State match and did not return to the lineup for ASU's next two matches.

ASU was dealt a tough hand early, drawing Iowa State in the first round. The match marked the first time ASU head coach Thom Ortiz faced his former team for which he was an assistant coach for the last nine seasons. The Cyclones lived up to their No. 8 billing and proved to be too tough for the Sun Devils, winning seven bouts.

ASU built an early 9-0 lead as Simpson won by forfeit at 125 pounds and Douglas earned a 10-3 decision over Zach Roberson at 133. Then Larkin suffered just his second loss of the season, falling to ISU's Aaron Holker, 9-5, at 141. The Cyclones then went on to win the next six matches, until Fluckiger salvaged the final bout at heavyweight with a 17-0 technical fall over Nicholas Britton.

Sent to the consolation first round, ASU then faced unseeded Lehigh. As evidenced by the final score, both teams were evenly matched. Simpson put ASU on the board first with an 18-9 major decision over Mario Stuart at 125, followed by Douglas' 4-0 decision over former Sun Devil Dan Hyman at 133. Lehigh easily made up six points with ASU's forfeit at 141, cutting the Sun Devil lead to 7-6. Senior Quinn Foster preserved ASU's advantage with a 6-0 decision over Troy Minavovic at 149 pounds.

The Sun Devils only won two of the next five matches, but both proved to be crucial. With the team score tied at 10, Frost earned a 20-3 technical fall over Ted Dufresne at 165 pounds. Lehigh jumped ahead 21-15 winning the next three matches, before Fluckiger tied the score with his pin of Sahl in 1:35. With the final score tied, the first criteria to decide the victor was six-point wins. ASU had one with Fluckiger's pin, while Lehigh had one with the forfeit at 141 pounds. The next criteria used was five-point wins and Frost's technical fall was the only such win for both teams, giving ASU the victory.

Advancing to the consolation second round, ASU drew No. 5 seed Iowa. The Sun Devils were only able to salvage one win against the Hawkeyes, falling 39-3. Frost was ASU's lone winner, with an 8-3 decision over Cory Connell.

Up next, ASU returns to Pac-10 dual action with two matches in California, Saturday, Jan. 26. The Sun Devils will face Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo at 1:30 p.m. PST, before heading to Cal State Bakersfield for a 7:30 p.m. PST. match.
