Phil Sheng Wins Consolation Singles Title At National Collegiate Tennis Classic

LAS VEGAS, Nev. - Stanford University freshman Phil Sheng (Thousand Oaks, CA/Thousand Oaks HS) captured the consolation single title at the 2002 National Collegiate Tennis Classic with a three-set win over teammate Sam Warburg (Sacramento, CA/Jesuit HS) on Sunday afternoon.

Also on Sunday, Cardinal junior David Martin (Key Biscayne, FL/Boca Raton Prep) fell in straight sets in the main draw championship match.

Sheng outlasted the 90th-ranked Warburg 3-6, 7-5, 6-3 to win his second match in as many days.

In the main draw final, the 49th-ranked Martin dropped to 6-3 on the year after a 6-4, 7-5 loss to Rodrido Grilli of UCLA. Martin advanced to the championship match with three straight set wins in the opening two days of the tournament.

The second-ranked Cardinal begins its 2002 dual season on Saturday, February 2 when it hosts #53 San Diego State at noon at the Taube Tennis Center.
