Jan. 21, 2002
Stanford, Calif. - Competing in two different tournaments over the same weekend, Stanford women's tennis squad saw two of its ranked singles competitors reach their respective title matches, only to fall to their opponents on Sunday.
Senior Gabriela Lastra (Reno, Nev.) watched her impressive run come to an end at the National Collegiate Tennis Classic in Las Vegas, Nev., over the weekend. Lastra, ranked No. 11, was upset by No. 20 Vilmarie Castellvi 6-4, 2-6, 6-1 in the singles championship. Lastra, one of four Cardinal women competing in the tournament, earned a first-round bye and outlasted UNLV's Paulina Janus 6-2, 3-6, 6-2 in the second round. Lastra then defeated teammate Erin Burdette (Jackson, Ga.) 6-2, 7-6 in the semifinals for the right to oppose Castellvi. Senior Lauren Kalvaria (Indialantic, Fla.) played well also, reaching the tournament semifinals.
At the Pac-10 Indoor Championships in Seattle, Wash., No. 42 Lauren Barnikow (Woodbridge, N.J.) was bested in the Flight 1 singles championship by USC's Jewel Peterson 6-4, 6-1. Barnikow topped UCLA's Sara Walker to make the final, after dispatching of Arizona State's Adria Engle 6-0, 6-3 in the first round and Erica Perkins of Washington State 7-5, 6-2 in the semifinal round. Sophomore Emilia Anderson (Cincinnati, Ohio) was the only other Cardinal to win a singles match at the tourney, defeating Washington State's Lorena Arias 6-2, 6-4 in the first round.
The Cardinal will open their dual match season Saturday, Jan. 26, against the Fresno State Bulldogs at 12 p.m. at home.
