12th-Ranked UW Women Begin Dual-Match Tennis Play at Home
Jan. 24, 2002
The 12th-ranked Washington women's tennis opens dual-match play this weekend, hosting No. 63 Boise State on Saturday (Jan. 26). The match begins at noon in the Nordstrom Tennis Center.
The Broncos won the Big West Conference championship last season en route to an NCAA Tournament berth. They are now competing as members of the Western Athletic Conference.
Boise State features a pair of ranked players who also form a ranked doubles tandem. Co-2001 Big West Players of the Year Helen Lawson and Renate Stoop are ranked Nos. 57 and 63, respectively in the ITA national singles poll.
The Huskies counter with a pair of ranked singles competitors, No. 35 Darija Klaic and No. 39 Claire Carter. Klaic, a junior, finished 94th in the final ITA rankings last season despite a wrist injury that limited her number of singles matches.
Carter garnered All-America accolades as a freshman last season after advancing to the round of 16 in the NCAA singles championships. She finished No. 32 in the final ITA ratings.
Other Huskies players that will add to the arsenal are Ilona Kordnonskaya and Colleen Gray. Both Kordonskaya and Gray had impressive performances at the Pac-10 Indoor Championships last weekend.
Klaic and Carter team up to form the nation's 15th-ranked doubles duo. They will likely face a tough matchup against Boise State's No. 1 doubles team of Lawson and Stoop that is ranked No. 23.
The Huskies are coming off there best season ever after advancing to the quarterfinals of NCAA Tournament and finishing with a No. 11 ranking.
