No. 1 Women's Swimming And Diving Cruises To Win Over No. 3 Arizona In Pac-10 Opener

Stanford, Calif. - No. 1 Stanford (4-0, 1-0 Pac-10) cruised to a convincing 182-118 dual meet win over No. 3 Arizona (5-1, 2-1 Pac-10) in the Pac-10 opener for the Cardinal at the Avery Aquatic Center on Friday. The Cardinal won 13 of the meet's 16 events. The victory came in Stanford's first dual meet since last October when the Cardinal knocked off defending NCAA champion Georgia and current No. 2 Texas in a three-day span.
Sophomore Tara Kirk broke her own Avery Aquatic Center pool record with a time of 2:13.89 to win the 200 yard breaststroke. Kirk also remained undefeated during her collegiate career in the 100 yard breaststroke with her 12th straight victory and a time of 1:01.52. Both times met the NCAA 'A' Qualifying standard.
Foschi won the 200 (1:49.49), 500 (4:52.38) and 1000 (9:54.28) yard freestyle events, picking up new season-bests in both the 200 and 1000 yard races. Foschi's victory in the 500 yard freestyle extended her winning streak to 14 in the event.
Boutwell won the 100 yard freestyle (50.18), 100 yard backstroke (55.54) and 200 yard IM (2:02.26), all new season-bests.
Senior Shelly Ripple added a pair of victories in the 100 and 200 yard butterfly events. Ripple remained unbeaten this season in the 200 yard butterfly by recording an NCAA 'A' mark of 1:59.14. She clocked in at 55.16 in the 100 yard butterfly.
Stanford also picked up victories in both diving events as freshmen Ashlee Rosenthal (264.60) and Lauren Donovan (285.75) swept the 1-meter and 3-meter competitions, respectively. Both point totals reached their respective NCAA Qualifying standards and Donovan's mark was a new season-best.
Individual winners for Arizona were senior Jenny Vanker (50 yard freestyle, 23.89) and freshman Jessica Hayes (200 yard backstroke, 2:00.58).
The Wildcats also won the 200 yard freestyle relay (1:34.85) with a team of Vanker, Hayes, senior Katie Zimbone and senior Caroline Kilian.
The Stanford women's swimming and diving team will next host No. 7 Arizona State in a dual meet at Avery Aquatics Center on Saturday, January 26 (Noon).
