Wrestling Dominates Doubleheader With Pacific, Central Washington
Jan. 25, 2002
EUGENE, Ore. - With nearly all wrestlers healthy for the first time in over a month, Oregon picked up dominating wins versus Pacific and Central Washington in front of 450 fans at McArthur Court Friday evening. In the opening dual, the Ducks defeated Pacific 32-15, winning five matches with bonus points, and in the nightcap, Oregon remained steady handing Central Washington a 39-9 loss. Oregon improves to 5-4 overall, 2-1 Pacific-10 Conference while Pacific falls to 9-9 overall and Central Washington drops to 7-7 overall.
'We've had a long lay off for heavy training and this was a good opportunity to get back into competiton mode,' Oregon head coach Chuck Kearney said. 'It was also good to get some of our guys who have been injured some confidence heading back into the Pac-10 schedule.'
Kearney did some tweaking in the line up against the Boxers, wrestling Tony Overstake at 165 (up from 157), Eugene Harris at 174 (up from 165) and Shane Webster at 184 (up from 174). All three wrestlers met the challenge with Harris defeating Tom Cinquini by fall at 0:37, Webster winning by major decision (19-7) over Ryan Jones and Overstake picking up the win after Mick Davis injury defaulted in the first period.
Oregon was without the services of junior heavyweight Eric Webb, currently ranked No. 16 by Intermat. Webb is recovering from a foot injury and the Ducks were forced to forfeit the heavy weight match in both duals. Despite spotting Pacific a 6-0 lead from the start, Oregon quickly narrowed the gap with Shaun Williams' (125) 17-6 major decision over Pacific's Kahaa Rezantes, who is ranked No. 5 in the NAIA rankings. At 133, junior Jason Harless finally returned to action and did so in fine form, winning by technical fall (19-4) over Garrett Miyake to give Oregon a 9-6 lead.
The Ducks followed with Brian Watson's major decision victory over Jason Smith and a 12-5 decision by Casey Hunt at 149. Pacific picked up wins at 157 where Troy Hall defeated Oregon freshman Michael Badicke 9-2 and at 197 pounds where Titus Folden pinned Jake Leair at 3:53.
'The thing about Michael is that he works as hard as anyone in the weight room,'Kearney said. 'He is a walk on that has had an opportunity to get valuable experience this season and he's only going to improve as time goes on. He's a team guy who will do whatever it takes to help us.'
In Oregon's second victory, Central Washington also had an early 6-0 lead after the Ducks' forfeit at heavyweight. Williams tied the dual immediately, pinning Jaime Garza at 3:51. Against the Wildcats, it was freshman Martin Mitchell starting at 133 and picking up the major decision win over Ross Kondo 14-6. Konday scored on an escape and a takedown in the first period and then earned three near fall points to take a 6-2 lead heading into the second period. Mitchell responded in the second period with the same series of points - an escape, takedown and three near fall points - to take an 8-6 lead. In the third period all scoring belonged to Mitchell as he went on to win and earn the Ducks bonus points.
After a win by decision at 141 and a Central Washington forfeit at 149, the Ducks had a commanding 20-6 lead. At 157 pounds, Overstake built on that lead, pinning Jared Novak at 4:14. Badicke fell at 165, but Oregon responded with three victories to close out the dual.
