WSU Falls to Washington 75-68

PULLMAN, Wash. - Brittney Hawks recorded her 10th double-double of the season with 19 points and 12 rebounds in the Washington State women's basketball team's 75-68 loss to the Washington Huskies at Friel Court, Friday night.
The loss dropped the Cougars to 2-18 overall and 0-10 in the Pacific-10 Conference. Washington improved to 11-8 overall and 6-4 in the conference.
Hawks performance marked the 16th game she has posted double digits in points this season. The senior from Rexburg, Idaho led a group of four Cougars that scored in double figures, which marked the first time that WSU has had that many players reach double-digits in a game this season. Candace Fields (13 points), Whitney Martindale (11 points) and Francine McCurtain (11 points) completed the quartet.
Andrea Lalum led a group of three Huskies to score in double figures with a career-high 25 points. Loree Payne scored 13 points and Kayla Burt added 10 points for the Huskies.
The difference in the game occurred at the foul line as both teams made 25 field goals in the contest. Washington converted 21-of-28 free throw attempts while WSU converted 13-of-20 attempts from the charity stripe.
Leading 33-31 at halftime, the Cougars extended their lead to 50-41 with 11:22 remaining in the game. Washington would capture the lead with a 10-0 run over a 1:20 span, which gave the Huskies a 51-50 advantage at the 10:02 mark.
With the game tied at 55 with 8:34 left, four consecutive points by Payne began an 8-0 Washington run that gave the Huskies a 63-55 lead with 6:33 remaining.
Washington maintained its advantage and held a 67-59 lead with 5:14 remaining. On the momentum of a 7-0 run, the Cougars pulled to within 67-66 with 2:44 left.
However, that was as close as WSU would get as Washington held off the Cougar rally by scoring eight of the game's final 10 points.
'This is a huge building block for us,' said WSU Head Coach Jenny Przekwas. 'At this point in the season teams get better or worse. We are getting better.'
