Beavers Drop Baseball Opener

Jan. 31, 2002

MESA, Ariz. - Oregon State lost its baseball season-opener to No. 17 Arizona State on Thursday, falling 13-5 on the opening day of the Bill Kajikawa Baseball Classic at HoHoKam Park. OSU (0-1) continues play in the tournament Friday against Oral Roberts at 11 a.m. PST.

Against Arizona State (1-0), the Beavers scored first but then the Sun Devils pushed across all their runs in the first three innings. Oregon State reliever Ty Kline then pitched five scoreless innings to finish the game on a clear, cold evening.

After the rough first three innings, there were plenty of positives in the Beavers' game.

'At this point, you've got to take the good things you did and remember that you're going to play 56 games,' OSU head coach Pat Casey said. 'I thought our guys handled themselves very well after the first three innings, and we did a lot of good things against a great team in their own park.

'Even in the late innings, we had guys taking extra bases, backing up bases ... all the things you've got to have guys doing to become a better ballclub, we had guys doing. Our guys kept battling.'

Kline, a junior righthander from Mt. Hood Community College, scattered six hits and didn't walk a batter in his five innings of work. He gave up a triple to the first hitter he faced, Nick Garrabrants, but Garrabrants was erased on a double play when Nick Walsh lined out to OSU leftfielder Seth Pietsch, Pietsch threw a perfect strike to catcher Paul Richie to nail Garrabrants trying to score.

The Beavers committed three errors but also turned in a number of other sharp plays in the field. OSU's only outdoor workout so far came Wednesday afternoon when it practiced on Arizona State's field on the heels of a brief snow flurry.

Junior Brian Barden, OSU's all-conference third baseman, was 2-for-5 with a solo homer carrying far over the leftfield wall in the top of the fifth inning. Senior designated hitter/second baseman Tom Creighton, who transferred from Fresno State in the offseason, was 2-for-5 with a double in his OSU debut and junior shortstop Will Hudson delivered a two-run double in the third.

A pair of plays in the early innings helped Arizona State break the game open.

In the top of the first, OSU had runners at first and third with one out against ASU righthander Mike Esposito, a possible first-round pick in this year's draft. Chris Biles hit a sinking line drive to leftfield, but the Sun Devils' Rod Allen made a diving catch for the second out, Kerisi Reynolds tagged up and scored on the play for a 1-0 lead but the catch likely kept the Beavers from scoring at least another run or two.

In the top of the second with ASU up 2-1, Oregon State starter Joshua Garcia retired the first two hitters. The junior righthander, a transfer from Cosumnes River Junior College, then got Garrabrants to chop a ball down the third-base line, Barden had no play on the ball. The Sun Devils, now into the top of their order, scored five times to make it 7-1.

'There were a couple of things that got them into big innings,' Casey said. 'There were a couple of balls that weren't hit too well but got us in trouble, and they capitalized.'

The game was the first time OSU ever played baseball in January. Despite the loss, the Beavers are still 65-28 all-time on Opening Day.
