Beavers Rally For Baseball Win

Feb. 1, 2002

MESA, Ariz. - Oregon State scored three runs in the ninth inning and three more in the 10th Friday afternoon, then held on for a 10-9 baseball win over Oral Roberts at HoHoKam Park. OSU (1-1 overall) finishes play in the Bill Kajikawa Classic against Southern Utah on Saturday at 10 a.m. PST.

On Friday, Kerisi Reynolds' two-out single in the ninth inning drove in the tying run. Tom Creighton's two-run single capped the Beavers' three-run 10th to beat Oral Roberts (1-1), which is ranked 31st in the nation by Collegiate Baseball newspaper.

'It's always tough to get your first win, and it's nice for us to get ours,' OSU head coach Pat Casey said. 'I'd rather win on a day when we don't do a few things right than to play well and lose.'

The Beavers took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning, then saw that slip to a 7-4 deficit by the end of the fourth. But, by the end of a clear, cool afternoon, practically the entire OSU roster contributed to the win.

Brian Barden started OSU's scoring, homering for the second straight day with a first-inning blast over the 390-foot sign in deep left-centerfield. After the first of Seth Pietsch's two doubles in the game, Andy Jarvis added a two-out, two-run single to make it 3-0.

Jake Postlewait relieved OSU starting pitcher Stephen Copeland and pitched 4 1/3 scoreless innings, striking out five, to give the Beavers a chance to get back in the game. Creighton, usually a second baseman, got the start in centerfield and made a diving catch on the warning track to end the bottom of the sixth inning to save a run and keep the score 7-4.

In the ninth, Oregon State got key pinch-hits from Wick Udy and Aaron Fausett. Fausett's drove in the inning's first run and Creighton's sacrifice fly the second before Reynolds knotted the game with his single.

Oregon State took the lead in the top of the 10th when backup catcher Ian McMullen took a one-ball, two-strike pitch in the middle of the back with the bases loaded to force in a run. Freshman Aaron Mathews' first collegiate hit had helped put the Beavers in that position. Creighton then delivered his two-run single to make it 10-7.

In his OSU debut, junior college transfer Jared Sanders earned the save after entering in the 10th inning with the bases loaded and none out. And the final out came when first baseman Levi Webber stretched and scooped a low throw with the bases still loaded.

Then there was Don Stykel, whose pitching career appeared over due to arm problems a year ago, he was credited with the pitching win for relieving Postlewait in the ninth and getting OSU out of the inning. It was his first win since beating Portland on April 6, 1999 and his first appearance since going 1/3 of an inning against Washington on April 29, 2000.

'It was great to get back out here, even though I vultured the win from Postlewait - he deserved it, the way he threw,' said Stykel, who spent the spring of 2001 on the grounds crew of OSU's Goss Stadium at Coleman Field while still going to school on a baseball scholarship. Starting late in the spring of 2000, he went one year without throwing a baseball.

'I missed the game so much - that was probably the longest year of my life,' Stykel said. 'But I just kept believing in myself, believing that I could do it.'

Last summer, after his workdays were done, Stykel would step onto a Coleman Field mound with a bag of baseballs and throw about 50 pitches into a net. OSU's coaches saw him and knew he wanted to come back, after doing some pitching in the fall, Stykel was invited to return to the roster this spring.
