Feb. 1, 2002

SEATTLE, Wash. - The No. 29 WSU women's tennis team fell 5-2 to the No. 26 Alabama Crimson Tide Friday in the Cougars' first match of the season at the Nordstrom Tennis Center.

The Cougars earned two of six singles victories. Senior Erica Perkins, ranked No. 38 by the ITA, beat No. 86 Selia Mathew, 6-3, 3-6, 6-1. Washington State's other ranked player, No. 50 Stacy McKenna, beat Jenny Ketchum, 3-6, 7-6, 7-5.

The Crimson Tide picked up two of the three doubles victories and the doubles point. Sophomore Lorena Arias teamed up with freshman Orsolya Sallai to defeat the Alabama combo of Mathew and Sophie Cremers, 8-6.

'Perkins and McKenna really showed their maturity and composure today,' head coach Cari Groce said. 'Our freshmen struggled a little, but Alabama is a very good team. We're happy to get the first match under our belt.'

The Cougars are now 0-1 overall, while the Crimson Tide improved to 3-0.

The Cougars will stay in Seattle and play the Washington Huskies Saturday at noon and San Diego State Sunday at 2 p.m.
