Keira Goerl No-Hits Louisiana-Monroe in Season Opener
Feb. 1, 2002
LOS ANGELES - Sophomore pitcher Keira Goerl pitched the 78th no-hitter in UCLA softball history on Friday afternoon at Easton Stadium, striking out 10 batters with a single walk as the only blemish in an otherwise perfect game. UCLA defeated Louisiana-Monroe 8-0 in five innings. It was the season opener for both teams.
This was UCLA's first no-hitter in a season opener since Courtney Dale no-hit Maryland on Feb. 4, 2000, at the South Florida-Louisville Slugger Invitational in Tampa, FL. As a freshman, Goerl pitched a perfect game on March 6, 2001 against UC Riverside, then shared a perfect game against the Highlanders on Apr. 25, 2001.
On Friday, Goerl started with a 3-0 count to ULM's Lori Tande before striking out Tande and four of the next five batters she faced. The lone base runner of the game for ULM was Arleigh Thorp, who drew a one-out walk in the fourth inning.
UCLA scored early and often, starting with a lead-off single down the line by Natasha Watley, who scored along with pinch-runner Amanda Simpson on a two-out double by Claire Sua. Watley provided UCLA's only run in the second inning, tripling to right field to score Crissy Buck.
In the third, the Bruins loaded the bases with a single by Stacey Nuveman, double by Tairia Mims and a walk by Sua. Mims and Julie Hoshizaki, who was pinch-running for Sua, scored on a shallow fly ball off the bat of Monique Mejia that dropped for a hit.
In the fourth, the Bruins had the bases loaded once again, and centerfielder Amanda Freed would score on a sacrifice fly by Sua before the bottom of the lineup ended the game for the Bruins in the fifth, with a lead-off single by Buck followed by a double off the left field fence for Mejia and a two-RBI hit to right by senior Erin Rahn.
UCLA returns to action with two of the four games scheduled for Saturday at Easton Stadium as part of the CSUN Early Bird Classic. The day's schedule starts with a 9 am first pitch between San Jose State and Long Beach State followed by an 11 am game between UCLA and San Diego State, a 1 pm game between San Diego State and Long Beach State, and a 3 pm game between Long Beach State and UCLA.
In other action on Friday at Easton Stadium, Washington defeated Long Beach State 8-0 in six innings. At Cal State Northridge, CSUN defeated San Diego State 4-3 in eight innings and CSUN defeated San Jose State 3-2.
