Softball Splits On First Day Of Season
Feb. 1, 2002
SAN MARCOS, Texas - The University of Oregon softball team opened the season with a pair of games at the B&G Properties Tournament in San Marcos, Texas Friday. The Ducks finished the day with an impressive 7-2 win over Texas Tech after dropping a 2-0 decision to Houston in their first game.
In the second game, every Oregon starter had at least one hit led by juniors Alyssa Laux (3-for-5) and Janell Bergstrom (3-for-4). Bergstrom added two RBI and Laux scored a run. Defensively, freshman Lindsey Kontra (1-0) picked up her first collegiate win in fine form, striking out six, walking two and allowing six hits.
'I'd like to think that our second game is a springboard for what this team can accomplish,' Oregon head coach Brent Rincon said. 'For a freshman to come in and pitch like that was huge, and our hitters really stepped up and beat a good Texas Tech team. With the exception of one error, I thought we played flawlessly.'
Oregon got behind 2-0 in the first inning against Houston, but held it scoreless through the remainder of the game. It was enough for Houston to secure the win as the Ducks were unable to score. Against Texas Tech, however, it was Oregon that took the early lead in the first inning. Andrea Vidlund, who finished the game 2-for-4 with three runs scored and two RBI, scored her first run in the first inning on an RBI single by Bergstrom.
A wealth of hitting in the top of the third inning extended Oregon's lead to 4-0. Laux led off with a double and Lynsey Haij followed with a single. Vidlund continued the rally with a single to score Laux, and Haij scored on an illegal pitch by Texas Tech pitcher Maggie Ayres. A double by Bergstrom scored Vidlund to cap Oregon's scoring rally in the inning.
Texas Tech scored two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to narrow the gap, but the Ducks responded with three more runs in the top of the fifth inning. Neither team scored in the final innings. Oregon finished the game with 15 hits.
