Feb. 1, 2002

Stanford, CALIF. - Stanford (9-7, 2-3 Pac-10) shut out Nevada in the first match of the day 47-0 and then followed up that performance with a 34-9 win over Pac-10 opponent Cal State Fullerton. Senior Levi Weikel-Magden (Boardman, OR) led off for the Cardinal at 157 and notched two wins en route to the Cardinal victories.

Weikel-Magden earned a 16-2 major decision against Nevada's Andy Talouse to start the Cardinal rolling against the Wolf Pack. Nevada, in its first year of existence, came close in a few bouts, but was unable to upset Stanford. Sophomore Matt Twomey (Bloomfield Village, MI/Seaholm) notched his second dual win of the season, on a comeback victory against Jose Ruano. Twomey won his bout in the final moments of the third period by a 9-8 margin. The Cardinal also welcomed back sophomore Nathan Peterson (Georgetown, IN/Floyd Central) as he recorded a 10-1 major decision. Also against Nevada, junior Kenji Arai (Santa Clara, CA/Bellarmine Prep) notched a technical fall with a 15-0 blanking of John Nakashima.

In the second meet of the day, junior Justin Walker (Otis Orchards, WA/East Valley) earned his second major decision of the day and Twomey chalked up his second decision. The Cardinal jumped to an early lead over the Titans with Weikel-Magden's 10-3 decision, a forfeit at 165 and a decision by freshman Imad Kharbush (Livonia, MI/Stevenson). The Cardinal kept the lead and secured the victory to improve its Pac-10 record to 2-3, with a 9-7 overall record.

Stanford will compete at the All Cal Invitational tomorrow at San Francisco State beginning at 9 a.m. The Cardinal will return to The Farm for its final home meet of the season on Saturday, February 16 at 7 p.m.
