Feb. 2, 2002
SAN MARCOS, Texas - The University of Oregon softball team secured its first upset of the season, defeating No. 19 Southwest Texas, 3-1, at the B&G Properties tournament in San Marcos, Texas Saturday afternoon. The Ducks were perfect on the day and improved to 3-1 overall after also defeating Texas A&M Corpus Christi 6-1.
'We have just been getting some timely hits,' Oregon head coach Brent Rincon said. 'Beating Southwest Texas State is a big win for our program to get this season going. We had outstanding pitching and defense and when you put those things together, you're a tough ball club to beat.'
Freshman Lindsey Contra picked up the win against Southwest Texas State and improved to 2-0 on the season. Kontra gave up just three hits and struck out four in seven innings pitched. Offensively, juniors Alyssa Laux and Lakeesha Eversley led Oregon, with Laux finishing the game 2-for-2 with a run scored and Eversley going 2-for-3 with one RBI.
Oregon took the early lead in the first inning after Laux doubled to center field and scored on a sacrifice fly by Andrea Vidlund. The Bobcats tied the game in the bottom of the second inning on an RBI single by Jessica Spring. Neither team scored in the following three innings, but the Ducks went ahead 2-1 in the top of the sixth inning when Eversley drove in Amber Hutchison. Oregon added its final run in the seventh inning to improve to 3-1 at the tournament.
In Oregon's opening game, sophomore Anissa Meashintubby had her first start in the circle for Oregon and improved to 1-0, allowing three hits and striking out five in the 6-1 victory.
