Women's Tennis Drops First Match To UCLA, 5-2

Feb. 1, 2002

LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- No. 7 USC women's tennis (2-1) dropped its first match of the season to No. 16 UCLA, 5-2, on Friday afternoon at Marks Tennis Stadium.

UCLA won the first doubles match at No. 1, but the No. 2 and 3 positions were still up for grabs. The Trojans' Luana Magnani and Anita Loyola managed to come back from down 3-2 to tie the No. 2 match at 6-6, but eventually fell to UCLA's Lauren Fisher and Megan Bradley, 8-6. At No. 3, USC's Melissa Esmero and Bernadette Bayani held a one-point lead throughout the match before pulling away for the final 8-6 win over Sarah Gregg and Catherine Hawley.

With a 1-0 lead after winning the doubles point, the Bruins didn't take long to clinch the victory by claiming two-set victories at No. 1, 2 and 3 singles, consecutively. But the Women of Troy fought for two wins of their own. Maureen Diaz defeated Gregg on the fourth court, 6-1, 6-7, 6-2, and Tiffany Brymer came back after dropping the first set to defeat Fisher, 2-6, 6-3, 6-3.

Next week the Women of Troy travel to the ITA Team Indoor Championships, Feb. 7-10, in Madison, Wisc.
