The win improved the Cougars to 1-2 this season, who were playing their third match in three days after losses to No. 26 Alabama and No. 11 Washington.
San Diego State jumped to a 1-0 lead in by sweeping three doubles match. The Aztecs' No. 60 duo of Lindsey Hedberg, and Silvia Tornier upset WSU's No. 22 tandem of Erica Perkins and Stacy McKenna at No. 1 doubles with an 8-5 victory.
Needing four victories in singles play to capture the match, the Cougars accomplished the feat with wins at the No. 2-5 positions.
McKenna, ranked 50th, disposed of Hedberg 6-2, 7-5 at No. 2 and fellow sophomore Lorena Arias posted a 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 victory at No. 3 over Katja Karrento.
Freshmen Orsi Sallai and Chris Martinez also won at No. 4 and No. 5, respectively to seal the victory for the Cougars. Sallai defeated Katey Becker, 6-7, 6-1, 60 and Martinez knocked off Katalina Romero, 6-4, 6-2.
'The four singles were won by two freshmen and two sophomores and that gives us a very good feeling about Cougar tennis in the years to come,' WSU Head Coach Cari Groce said.
Groce added, 'San Diego State is a very good team and will climb in the rankings. It is good for us to have a win over them early in the season because they are going to beat a lot of teams. It gives us confidence at the end of a long weekend.
